Hi,
I'm thinking of going mac. My PC is rather old (Pentium 3ghz) but most importantly, the motherboard has an issue with my Motu USB interface.
At this point, I'm thinking of keeping my old desktop for games and internet surfing and buy a laptop for music. The mac book pro is one of the options. The 13' screen is a bit small but I would connect an external monitor anyway. Cubase wouldn't work on it, but I have a sequencer that came with motu + my mastering software is both PC and MAC.
Never used mac before though so I'm not sure what to expect... what are your views on that particular laptop?

no pc versus mac in my post this time...
macbook pro 2.4 GHz 4 GB ram, running Digital Performer with motu traveler AND onyx (yes no problem to run 2 or more gear simultaneously as audio devices), about 30 tracks with more than 3 IFX each... no problem for CPU.

Thanks Lorenzo,
now that you mention Digital Preformer... how do you find this software? It seems that my Cubase won't run on Mac with intel processors so I might use the Audio Desk (which was bundled with Motu 823) or go for Logic express...

Hi, DP is a little strange and different from Cubase and other DAW, it is focused more on recording than on production (so no loop or samples within the program itself), it really depends on how you organize your work. Anyway it can give you a real fast workflow when you learn how to use it. _________________ http://www.synthaddicted.com |

Hi sewa,
I think you will be fine with the MacBook. I would wait a week or two maybe. Apple computers will be shipping with Snow Leopard now. I 'think' there is a version of Cubase that will work with Leopard and thus Snow Leopard but you should give them time to update Cubase. You might want to go this way instead of learning a completely new DAW. If you want to go with DP you can order it from many places. The company is MOTU (Mark of the Unicorn). I'm not sure if you can order it directly from them but you can check. You can order it from Sweetwater I think. I would try to find it in Europe though if you can to save on shipping.
Here is the MOTU link:

Looks like they have done their homework as usual and are prepared for Snow Leopard. DP will likely work with Snow already. I'm not sure if you will need new drivers though for your audio interface. You can read more on their site. |

oh I forgot! MOTU has a great support, if you buy a DP second handed you just need to contact them to switch your personal data with the previows owner's data. If you find a good deal with an old second handed version you can buy that one, give your personal data to motu and than you can enjoy the update price for the latest version!

Thanks,
actually I'm thinking of buying Logic Express. I'm going to the US in two weeks so shipping is not an issue. At 199$ it looks like a great deal.
I considered DP because I already have Audio Desk, which came with my audio interface. However, AD does not support midi and upgrade to DP is almost 400$.
