well... I've been reading a lot about studio monitors, brands, models, types, etc.

basically what I'm looking for are affordable but really good (as honest as possible) studio monitors for a small room where I'm to be recording and mixing. the aim is to get a good one with some power to it and good frequency response in most areas...

any ideas?

I know of these ones that maybe could help me:

M audio Studiophile AV40
Samson Resolv A5
Samson Mediaone 5A (though I think they have no balanced input...)

any opinion on these?

thanks!

I'd rather go for one of the these:
KRK RP5/6/8 ROKIT G2
Event TR6/8 (not sure if those are still available?!)
M-Audio Studiophile CX5/8
Yamaha HS-50/80M

As a practical solution to affordable project studio monitoring they all do a great job.

You may also think of getting a sub. Alternatives:
M-Audio BX10S
KRK10S

The BX5s also have a good price/value ratio. I had them before I changed to the Event TR8.
Only issue is that the BX5s have a weak bass, but you still have the option to add a subwoofer later.

The M-Audio BX8 and the JBL LSR308 are both very good monitors in the $300 to $500 price range. I found this article very helpful when I was looking at monitors:

Stay away from any monitors under $200. You'll end up with interference most of the time. Lower end JBL and Yamaha are the best for budget monitors for their lack of coloration, construction, along with quality internal parts and drivers/tweets.

Can't afford them and need under $200--Get a desktop amp/DAC and hook up some passive speakers like Micca or Air Emotiva used off Reverb.com

I've just upgraded to BX8 D3's...

1. I didn't realize how much bigger they were
2. I can hear bass!!!
3. Great sound/performance for the money
