Well this is to a larger extent, necessary for all my kit beyond just the Kronos, but I am in need of a mixer and audio interface. I was thinking, instead of throwing down for a RME UFX and then a mixer later, how about I go with the 01V96i? I am curious if the sound quality is going to be any different? I am attracted to the fact my interface would be included in the mixer together. Is there any drawback to this?? Should I go with the RME?? Confused

My motu 828 mkiii is excellent as a mixer / interface. You should look into it!

+1

After trying a myriad of different mixer/interface combinations, the 828 has been the most productive by far.

As an audio interface, it works really well, although I did have some issues with Windows 7 64-bit drivers for a while. To be fair, I hadn't done a fresh install of Windows since upgrading XP to Vista, Vists to Windows 7 RC1, Windows 7 RC1 to Retail, so .... :p

I love that I can use it as a mixer even when the computer is off. I use it for monitoring and mixing keyboards, mics and external effects when just practicing. I also use it for recording audio into the Kronos. I can save mixer settings as hardware presets that can be recalled via the LCD screen at a moment's notice for different usage scenarios.

Plus, it feels like it's built like a tank.

I only wish that it was possible to control the internal digital mixer via MIDI. I would be in heaven then.

I think an RME or the 828 are the only real choices in 1RU size. I believe RME may have the quality edge, particularly with their drivers, but they are considerably more expensive.

MOTU ultralight has USB and FireWire.
Mixer has full complement of dynamics
and verb. Multiple busses. Analysis tools.
Sync tools. Power from computer interface
or a wall wart.

All params are addressable from the knobs
without a computer though not as easily.

2 will fit side by side if you need redundant
switch on the fly backups with an APB Mix Switch
or equivelant if your running tracks live.

There was an excellent article by Mike McNight
in Keyboard magazine several months ago.

It's pretty darn flexible.

The 828 is similar. More in and out options.
Not sure if it's buss powered though.

I use a Roland Octa-Capture. Good solution for digital mixing and supplying a small band with in ear monitors in a live setting. Wouldn't recommend if you don't own a laptop though. Probably similar specs to the Motu products if you're looking for options.

I think the RME UFX eats the 828 for breakfast, to be honest.
And unless you really need lots of controls, it's all the mixer you will ever need. Totalmix is extravagantly flexible.

Not dissing MOTU, it's a decent interface, but in a different class than the UFX.

Agreed about the sound in a perfect environment.
But if it's live, you'll not hear or notice any difference.

I haven't tried it myself, but my friend runs a lot of backtracks for one project, and specifically switched from the MOTU to the RME 'cause the latter gave him tighter lows. I guess it varies depending on what you need it for though.

OK I am back around to looking for my interface/mixer. I like the 828 and it's attractively priced, however, I read a review that with the pre-amps are weak and you have to crank up the gain and it will raise the noise floor. I had that problem with the old FireBox I had. I just thought the pre-amps would be enough for all my synths. Is this true? Would the UFX solve this?

Have you looked at the Apollo by UAD?

Also the Behringer X32?

Does the X32 actually offer multichannel audio interface out of the box? I think it needs an expansion card. Also is quite expensive, being a full digital console mixer.

Easy enough to find that out:

http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/X32?gclid=CPXepNKsobACFQF_hwodEVo-YA

Instant compatibility with major DAWs
Behringer X32 digital mixer comes with the XUF 32-Channel USB/FireWire recording card, which lets you record your tracks straight into your DAW. How convenient is that? Right out of the box, you get compatibility with ProTools, Logic, Cubase, Studio One - and nearly any other ASIO or Core-Audio compatible DAW!

The street price is fairly high but you do get a lot of bang for your buck. Also I think I had a much better price quote from the same mob who sold me the Kronos. Its a matter of pure gear lust not actual need for me.
