hi everyone,

a little while back i was lucky enough to visit the korg headquarters here in japan (which i never realized i live surprisingly close to!), and got to hang out with yuuichi nakahara (designer of the original wavedrum) and haruhiko motohashi (chief engineer of the current wavedrums). they were even kind enough to pull out an original wavedrum from their back room, and it was amazing to compare the two generations of instruments. the original wavedrum really was a different animal... after hearing it, i suggested to them the idea of a limited edition "wavedrum classic," similar to the "wavedrum oriental" (using the same body as the current models, aiming for same price range as oriental) but with bonus sounds based on the original wavedrum - some of its unique sounds are a bit more on the synthetic side. i also suggested more deep bass sounds for house music and things like that (not just the atmospheric synth sounds like the current versions focus on).

if there were such a thing, i would certainly be the first to buy it. i'm wondering if anyone else would be into such an edition of wavedrum? i'm asking seriously - in hopes of convincing them it would be a good venture... Wink

basically, the "oriental" came about by user/buyer requests from the middle east... so i'm hoping a "classic" is just as possible....

they did say one of the difficulties would be that the original wavedrum used algorithms that exploited certain aspects of the original processors, and that contributed to the sound quality and performance - so it would take some work to figure out how to reconstruct the sounds for the current processors which are faster and mapped differently....

any thoughts?

would I swap my ORI for a CLASSIC ? not shure

is there really kind of an open ear for suggestions ?

CLASSIC to be sold with a metal rim / wooden rim or
without rim , so that you could carve your own wooden rim
I understand a wooden rim is expensive

colour of the rim ?
prize about oriental level ??

this & more would be a big kick for WD

I hope many people join in ,

i think it's most important KORG out a new modele with the USB connector against a new other version limited

imagine an instant, if with USB you can put your own sample multi-layer on , for example, 10 preset free for user can build a new sound with his own samples, the memory for this 10 preset custom preset are limited into 20 MO maximum, it's enought for enjoing and make good stuff with it !

i prefer korg make a new version with connector USB include 10 or 20 free slot customizable preset user with 20 or 48 MO memory limited add for a little increase price than oriental

i think this solution it's more startegic and more flexibility for many style of music choice of each user do want with it

arf....the english language it's very complicate for me....i hope you understand my mine.

I support any and all editions of a Wavedrum that may be brought to life. Wink

That being said, I would imagine that overall market demand would be at least one key motivator for anything like a "Classic" to see the light of day.
But who knows. Korg seems to embrace innovation and experimentation for its own sake at times. From what I understand, that is pretty much how the Original Wavedrum came into existence to begin with — they wanted to push the limits of what was possible as opposed to inventing a "hot selling product."

I'm still waiting to get to play one of the Originals myself. Only then would I truly be able to assess the differences/similarities between the old and new.

The "Mini" has some sounds that I wish were part of the current Wavedrums. As I've mentioned previously, there's a melodic bass program that sounds exactly like one from the '94 Wavedrum. And yes, USB would have to be part any of new product. I mean, seriously.

WaveDrummer, i didn't understand all the subtilities of the english language, but when i read you....you want say korg plans to do a new version with USB ? ....really ?, i have doubt about it.

if i undestanding wrong, please tell me if i make a mistake

include no samples (well , ok , maybe a few free slots , cool)
all algos

about the same original 100 presets as 94
same prize as Silver ?

as one step further to the ULTIMATE

This is unfortunate, I'm sure they would sell more units if they would put a USB port

the Japanese have a decidedly odd way to think their business strategy, i can't understand their policy...

If we're adding items to the wish list then I would like to see some more melodic loops or sounds so that the single player can add somthing other than perciusion. As mentioned the bass voices are great
Puhapse the way is for USB with memory so we can add our own backing as suggested

so, after just talking with my friend at korg, the wavedrum ultimate is a fake... that video on youtube is just something made by a fan, like the alien video. maybe everybody else knew this, but i didn't, haha! anyway, THERE IS NO WAVEDRUM ULTIMATE!!!
