Is it possible to get the damper pedal to work on the piano sounds but not the strings? I cannot get used to taking my foot of the pedal every time I change chords, so I wonder if I can isolate the damper pedal for the string sounds only?

Yes you can. Press the PAGE button, and press MIDI filter, and uncheck where it says "Enable damper" on the strings.
