|

Hi, a newbie here.
I have a quick question as I want to plug in an external midi keyboard to plug a different sound from the Krome. I know that I can do it through the midi-out port from the Krome.
But anyone tried plugging it in through the usb port on the Krome? Does it work? As the newer midi-controllers only have an usb plug in, I find it easier if I can just plug them in usb-to-usb rather than finding a midi-usb cable.
Help please. |

I gave it a quick try today using my Roland Cakewalk A300-pro keyboard/controller.
I had to get a USB A to B adaptor as both USB sockets are type B and I don't have a B to B cable (which are not very common).
Anyway, my quick try wasn't successful. I tried various different control maps in the Cakewalk including the "generic" ones for GM and Midi, and I tried looking around in the various Krome settings but couldn't get it to respond.
Whereas I was able to connect it OK using a MIDI cable. But as you said, you know that works.
I will have a closer look at the A300 manual and see if I can see anything there. |

That only works with the Kronos, because that is essentially a PC running Linux.
Using a USB B to B cable is not a very good idea in any case, perhaps in this specific instance it was safe but you could damage your equipment because both sides expect to either send or get power from the other. There's a reason they have two different plugs. |

Fortunately, my A300 has a power switch that allows you to select USB power on/off.
Theoretically, I can see that it could work as the A300 can send MIDI over USB, and the Krome can receive it. But the A300 requires a driver on the PC, and so it may well be the driver that is doing much of the work and without that the Krome cannot understand what the A300 is sending. |

I think your A300 has a switch that allows you to select whether the power is coming from the wall wart or from the USB port, that doesn't actually stop any current that is coming from the other side. But the Krome wouldn't actually send any power anyway because, as I said before, it doesn't support USB devices. Your PC has to recognize the A300 as a USB midi keyboard before it knows what to do with the data that is coming in. The Krome can't do this. |
