Same thing was happening to me the device is online checkbox was grayed out... this is what fixed it for me.... I turned the airpot off, and the device came online (also try all the usb ports.)
Turning the Airport back on, after the device was online didn't cause it to go back offline.

Help! Mac not detecting padkontrol
I have a macbook 13 OSX 10.5.7 (intel based), I installed the latest Korg Padkontrol drivers, and turned the padkontrol on... the computer does not detect it (it's gray in Utilities>Audio/midi setup)....
