Help!! MAJOR bug in my OASYS!

Post by ryan42 »

Okay, first off, sorry but the title isn't deceptive. I just have a different kind of bug in mind. Second off, stay with me guys!

So where I live (TX) we have some type of minor ladybug infestation during this season, and for that reason among others I always have my O covered when I'm not using it, but today when I stepped out for a water, came back, I saw one laying motionless on its back slightly under the black felt at the top of the keys. Several times I have carefully extracted one from here (they like to play dead there) but this time I slipped, and knocked it into the keybed... around the B key underneath the value sliders.

So I freaked out, right?

First thing I did was remove the two screws on the end and open the top cover back... then I saw the metal plate that was blocking my access to the top of the keys... I took off the access plate for the RAM and the left side of the two piece metal strip that covers the top of the keys and looked in and there he was, on his back, now wiggling frantically.

So I want to get him out. My first thought was tape... I put some tape down there and several times pulled it up with him not on it... finally I looked and he wasn't there anymore... I tilted the O backwards and tapped on the bottom and he reappeared.... but apparently the 5th time I had to do this he had had enough.

Now he's trapped inside somewhere under the keybed. I actually removed the other half of the metal strip as well as every screw underneath the keybed assembly and tried to see if I could lift it out to no avail (My keyboard repair experience comes with a complete overhaul on lubricating every individual key on a Yamaha EX5 and soaking all it's metal case parts... prettymuch complete disassembly, and pulling apart a Korg X5D to fix a bad sound output. Both were highly successful so I wasn't too nervous). Anyway, didn't get far with that and after seriously 3 hours watching to see if it would crawl back out... I gave up. I swore I wouldn't worry about it...

BUT I'M DAMNED WORRIED ABOUT IT!

I don't know about ladybugs... what they "do" but what if it lays eggs??!!??!!?!?!?!!!?! Or what if it crawls into the mechanical beings of the keybed?!?!?!?!!?!!! Does the Korg warranty cover LADYBUG DAMAGE?!?!?!

OK I know how to get rid of it

Put some warm milk in a bowl on the floor, with some chocolate chip cookies next to it. Then hide behind the door, sit and wait..When she crawls out to eat, grab your keyboard and run like hell!!
Sorry I just couldnt resist!

SERIOUSLY... There is a product called a Ladybug Black Light Trap. It uses radiating black light to attract and contain the ladybugs. Dont ask me where to buy it?? Search googlle..here is lady bug answers.

I will look into that to make sure further ladybugs don't infest my O.... but what about what's already in there?

.... but what about what's already in there?
1) Place a small TV set next to your keyboard. 2)Turn on an episode of Oprah. 3) When the Mrs Ladybug comes out to watch it ...(No woman can resist watching Oprah) ..whammo with the ole flyswatter!!

I have also noticed that there is a gap in my OASYS between the black felt and the keys, in my piano the felt is touching the keys effectively preventing dust (and ladybugs) getting in.
The gap is 4mm wide at right end of the keybed, 1mm at left, and 3mm at center. I imagine it is not supposed to be there..

I have the same gap, but mine is uniform. The felt is attatched to the upper metal of the keyboard so you could probably change it easily with something thicker. Any ideas?

Judging from the shape of the cover and the adjoining surfaces, I believe that the keybed itself is slightly tilted. I would not try to adjust the keybed, but your gap being uniform, attaching extra layer of felt might be just what you need.
At least our local hardware stores sell sef adhesive felt sheets for preventing furniture scratching floors etc. Cutting that to fit and attaching on top of the original would be fairly easy.
