Bank and program management

Post by steve m »

Hi Guys

I use my Oasys 76 along with 4 other keyboards and an effects rack. For each song that I play, I have to go around each instrument and call-up the required bank/patch. ( I know that I don't need all that stuff, I just can't bring myself to put any of it away - or ever sell it )

Does anyone know of an easy to use PC software package which will allow me to store the MIDI bank/patch maps ? All I need is a database that lists each song, and allows me to specify the bank and program information for each MIDI channel. Then when I call up the song, the patch data is sent to all my keyboards.

I can't seem to find anything that does this. Maybe there's a MIDI patchbay with a software application that can do it ?

Whilst I am writing this I have just had an idea. Maybe there's a way to have the Oasys send out bank/patch change CC's for external devices ? Is it possible in a combi to have ( say ) tracks 12-16 mapped to external MIDI channels 2-6 and then each time the combi is called up it sends out the patch info to my other gear ?

Any ideas or thoughts would be welcomed.

Yes, that's quite simple to do! Set the Timbre Status to EX2 for complete control of bank select messages.

Thanks for the quick response Dan

I'll have a go tonight and see what happens. If it all works OK, each time I call up a Combi on teh oasys all my other gear should follow.

cheers

Remember to use MIDI filters and key/vel zones to control the MIDI messages sent to the external devices. If all the zones and filters are open, they'll get notes and CCs as well as program change and bank select, which you may or may not want.

Hi Dan

Well it all worked really well - kind of......

I allocated the last 3 'timbres' of a combi to be EX2 midi channels 14,15 and 16 and set my other keyboards to those MIDI channels. I looked up the correct LSB and MSB settings and enetred them into the combi. In Global / MIDI settings i enabled bank and program changes, and in local midi filters turned off all the other stuff that I didn't want to send. It worked, I could control my other keyboard patches and banks wonderfully. But.

I have an 88 note weighted keyboard ( GEM PROMEGA 3 ) that I like to use as a 'master keyboard'. ( I couldn't afford an O88 ! ) I send MIDI note data to the Oasys on CH1, but sadly the GEM doesn't have a prog change filter option, and each time I change a patch on it, all the Gch timbres on the Oasys Combi change too.. Of course the Global / MIDI settings on the Oasys affect the incoming and outgoing MIDI data. To prevent the Oasys timbres changing, I have to disable the prog and Bank change boxes, which of course kills the TX data to my other keyboards. As far as i can tell there is no way of globally enabling outgoing TX data but filtering out incoming RX data.

I could go into every Gch timber in every combi and switch off the change settings using the local filters, but that would take for ever. If you know of a way that the Global MIDI settings can be set differently for MIDI in and MIDI out , please let me know.

I was very happy to see that in theory it all works though. :)

Hi Steve, just saw this.

Does it help if you set Combis to not change their internal programs when an external program change is received? I've forgotten the name of the parameter, but it's in Global mode...

Hi JG

No, I can't find that option anywhere. In the Global P1 MIDI page there are options to select whether program, bank or combination changes are allowed in the MIDI filter section, ( this is for RX and TX messages ) and in P0 there is an option to load karma settings with programs and combinations.

The 'set Combis to not change their internal programs when an external program change is received' option is hiding somewhere - I can't find it.

I'm, running V1.3.1 software. Is it a new option in the update V1.3.3 issued a couple of weeks ago ?

Cheers

Yeah, I was thinking of the Combi Change option in the MIDI Filter box. But that won't allow different send/receive behaviour, sorry. :-(

Hi,

have you thought of a miditemp PMM 88 / PMM 88 E ?

Before I reduced my setup to an Oasys and a Motif I used to organize 3 Keyboards and 4 rackmodules in my live setup (Kurzweil, Korg, Waldorf, Roland, Hammond, EMU) and the PMM 88 did a great job; you can program zones, messages, filter, rechanneling, program changes etc and organize your setup perfectly. It can convert any keyboard into a masterkeyboard.
But I´m not sure if they are still selling it. Maybe you get a used one on ebay.
