RAM Upgrade – One Lump or Two

Hi Folks,

I’m probably going to do my upgrade to 2 gigs of RAM sometime over the next few weeks, and there’s something I’m curious about.

I can either get a single stick with the EXACT specs quoted in the Parameter Guide to go with the Hynix RAM that comes in the Oasys, or, I can spend a little extra and buy 2 sticks of Corsair, Kingston, etc., and get a so called “matching pair”.

Are there any advantages to the “matching pair” method? Would there be any guarantee that the specific Brand I choose is going to work in the Oasys anyway, whether I get "one lump or two"?

What sorts of other issues, if any, came up during your particular RAM upgrade experience?

Hi -

I can't comment on the advantages of a matching pair - that's a good question I hope is answered - but I can tell you I simply purchased an extra gig or ram and installed it (from crucial) and my OASYS has worked flawlessly and without any noticeable lacking of performance that I can testify to. So one extra Gig of RAM will do the trick for sure; but as you indicate - it'd be interesting to hear if a matching pair might improve performance a little.

could you provide me with some info on the ram needed please and installation method for this? I am finally getting down to some work on the OASYS and need the ram to upgrade and provide further power.

can't find any info online for this. could you guys help or is there a PDF with these details

Hi Lew -

The procedure is not complicated. There is a complete description of the RAM required either in the Operation manual or the parameter manual - they're not available to me right now but if you go to www.korguser.net and login and go to the OASYS section you will find all the latest documentation in pdf format and search for RAM and you should find there the exact specification of the RAM moduel which at this stage will be very cheap to buy online from Crucial or Kingston; and you'll find a complete description on how to install the upgrade - it involves taking off the end panels and openign up the OASYS but it's easy to install - just follow the guidelines and look after the OASYS when opening up and all will be fine.

sorry don't have more specific details right now - but as said they are in the documentation.

184 pin DIMM DDR SDRAM, unbuffered, non-ECC

PC2700 (DDR333 CL2.5)

I understood matching pairs only had an advantage with dual channel motherboards, don't know if the oasys is. Even then I think the gain is debatable. Having said that putting in the extra gig with the right specs is a total no-brainer, do it!

Have now 2 gb ram installed on my OASYS 88 running OS 1.3.3

it's that easy to install the memory even a totally blind guy like myself can do it hahahahahahahaha

And more great news,

I decided to go with one stick of RAM rather than a pair, and just installed it today. On Boot up, Momma says she’s reading 2 gigs, so that’s the name of that tune.

As Lewis said, it’s that easy! Enjoy your new Oasys my friend. I know I’m sure enjoying mine! It does indeed ROCK!

With both Lewis and myself successfully upgraded at this point in time, we could probably call it quits on this particular thread, unless someone else is having difficulties. Thanks to one and all for your thoughts and suggestions.
