Licensing ones own OASYS Programs for use by others?

Post by Kevin Nolan »

Hi

I want to put up onto the download section of this forum some of my programs for anyone to use with the provision that if any of them are used in a commercial job that I get a credit for having originated the sound.

Any recommendations on what copyright / license options are available to me? Nothing heavy handed - just looking for a mainstream option - a kind of 'good will requirement :-) ' if used commercially.

I don't know much about current copyright options and would appreciate any pointers.

Cheers,
Kevin.

Hi Kevin.

It's extremely rare to find something like that in a licence agreement, but I do have a few AKAI CD that do specify things like this.

My Symphony of Voices CD set is one such library that requires you give credit in a very specific way. So leave it with me and I'll scan in the booklet and upload it tomorrow. You might like to use their wording on all this.

Cheers
Sharp.

Hi Sharp -

Thanks for looking at that license for me (and anyone else interested). However - this isn't really what I'm looking for. Rather, I remember hearing that there are newly emerging copyright 'types' for the digital age that seem more 'communal' than what you're suggesting. In other words - I'm not looking to put 'small print' on any programs I put up for use; rather to see if I can attach a common or well known copyright type to the sounds where any user will know that they will give a credit if used - or - perhaps a different copyright where sharing is more open/encouraged all round.

As said - I'm not looking to attach dubious conditions to any sounds posted - but instead give them away under any new 'copyright trend' that perhaps sampler users, DJs and so on might use widely.

I'll look into it myself - I remember reading an interesting article on it in Sound on sound but can’t now find it or remember the specifics.

So if anyone has any advice /pointers on the sort of thing I'm talking about would be glad to hear from you.

Hi Kevin.
I see. Sorry I've not heard of anything like that before.

Sounds interesting though.

I think what I'm after is a Creative Commons Liences but I need to read more into it. Wikipedia provide some info but its still not 100% clear to me:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creative_Commons

will post more if I determine "where it's at" in relation to this.

cheers,
Kevin.

Hi Kevin,

It seems to me like a Creative Commons attribution license is roughly what you're looking for, the only caveat being that under the basic license somebody using it would have to credit you for any usage rather than only commercial use.

It does specify "you must attribute the work in the manner specified by the author" so I imagine if you added a note saying that attribution is not required for noncommercial use, that would be a good enough. On the other hand I'm not a lawyer ;)

Hi richwest -

Thanks for your clarification - I understand the creative commons license now. Actually even its too strong for my needs here. I'm simply going to post the sounds (which are nothing special but feel their worth sharing) and in the readme file ask that if any are used commercially to give credit, but that there's no obligation to do so.

Cheers,
Kevin.
