KorgFans status
I've been asked about it a few times and so I thought I'd post here with a bit of a statement about what is really going on.
I don't really run the domain or the technical side of it, I'm mainly concerned with moderating and populating the website with content. So I'll do my best here...
KorgFans has been offline for almost a month now. I've been told by Martin (moccando) that the domain name expired.
It has been renewed, but is at this time no longer connected to the Ning server for some reason and we have been trying to resolve this.
The problem is compounded by the fact that Martin is currently only on limited internet access.
Of further concern is that the Ning hosting plan for KorgFans will expire due to lack of funds. We rely on donations made on the site to keep the server running as neither of us are able to spare the small amount of money required to keep the account up on our own.
We've also explored alternative hosting structures in the past but there isn't really any software which offers the same level of user experience as the Ning platform currently.
We will continue to endeavour to have the site back up as soon as possible.

sounds like a heck of a challenge, remember how much trouble korg forums have had in the past, and this is a heavily frequented site

Not really familiar with this platform but... what underlying os/technologies does it use? If it can be hosted on a Linux-based server, maybe I could help you guys out.X-Trade wrote: We've also explored alternative hosting structures in the past but there isn't really any software which offers the same level of user experience as the Ning platform currently. It appears to be based on a LAMP environment, BUT the system is proprietary and (currently at least) not available for private hosting.vEddY wrote:Not really familiar with this platform but... what underlying os/technologies does it use? I think I found possibly one good package which had a fairly reasonable paid license, but a lot of the other social networking packages were either too complex and not very user-friendly or not flexible enough. I think for ease of use it is important to have a fairly familiar interface that reflects other sites like Facebook and MySpace.
Music hosting is another useful feature which we lost on Ning when they went over from free hosting to a paid model - we simply can't afford the 'pro' package to allow users to post their own music, which was partly the point of the site in the first place. KorgFans is about sharing your patches and your experiences with your Korg equipment, what music you make with it, etc.
I'm considering starting work on my own package but I have absolutely no experience with MySQL or Javescript (yet), just simple PHP/HTML/CSS/etc.

Maybe try working with Joomla, it's got a huge user base, million modules, a lot of companies doing commercial modules and designs for it etc. If you switch to something like that, something LAMP-based in particular, I'd be able to help you out no sweat.X-Trade wrote: It appears to be based on a LAMP environment, BUT the system is proprietary and (currently at least) not available for private hosting.

Unless someone reverses a dump truck full of money to your door, you will always have problems hosting such a site. There’s no such thing as unlimited bandwidth and all those other unlimited plans hosts offer. You simply need the type of hosting plan that costs a small fortune.
If your interested and don’t want the hassle of trying to make it all work, I need someone to run the download section here.
At least that way you don’t have to worry about running costs or anything.
Regards
Sharp.

Thanks for the offer. I'll take another look at Joomla too.
