the allen-heath console looks good but it only has 4 stereo inputs. I am kind of spoiled by having 12 stereo inputs on my VS2480CD.
They talk about coming out with a 16 stereo model in the future.
But this 4 stereo input model is approx $2500 so will 4x inputs mean 4x price.....?

Well have to wait and see.

When you use SPIDF are you bypassing the converters ?

You're welcome. In case you need any special-screenshots let me know the exact one and I'll make a copy for you.
I remember how the CCs sent by the Oasys drove me crazy and I spent quite some time to figure out what's going on and how to adjust the filters. It's times like these I wish the Oasys-Sequencer would be better. And when it comes to recording Karma ... big sigh ... so much better in the Oasys than externally. But I'm afraid we won't see any substantial improvements on the Oasys-sequencer ... :?

Yea you read my mind,
I wish the sequencer had metering ,I can't tell what tracks are playing sometimes. The deeper I get into the Oasys the more i realize I have know Ideal what this thing can do.

I want to use a new Logic (Express 9) on a new MacBook Pro (2.53 GHz i5, 4GB RAM) - to record mainly OASYS but also acoustic instruments sometimes. Please give advice helping to decide which setup is the best solution:

Setup 1.
I would directly connect the OASYS' digital output to the Mac digital input. I could record acoustic instruments with a mic connected to OASYS audio in.
Q1: Can you advise what digital cable to use?
Q2: For monitoring is it OK to use the Mac audio out to near-field monitors? Or should I use the Mac digital out connected back to OASYS?

Setup 2.
I would use digital connection from OASYS to a cheaper external USB soundcard like E-MU 0404. This would give more possibilities in monitoring etc.
Q: Would it result equal or better recodring sound quality than Setup 1?

Setup 3.
I would use audio connection from OASYS to a better external FW soundcard like Apogee Duet.
Q1: The Mac has a FW800 connector but that soundcard has FW400 - will it be a problem?
Q2: This would give less possibilities in connections, but would it still result the best recording sound quality?

Setup 4.
Mackie Onyx? Allen&Heath ZED 14? For more microphone inputs (drumset recording). What about this recording quality compared to the Setups above?

Thank you very much, best regards,
Akos

Not sure which would be the best setup for you, but I've reconfigured my setup several times and think I've finally got it pared down and optimized for my needs. It is similar to what you describe in Setup 3.

I'm using my Oasys with Logic via a Focusrite Saffire Pro24 DSP connected to my iMac. I picked up a (cheap!) FW 400 to 800 cable on eBay to connect the interface to the Mac.

I use the ADAT port on the interface for 8 channels of Oasys audio (although I tend to mainly mix to stereo, so could just as easily opt for using that port as a spdif rather than ADAT). Obviously, if you don't have the EXB-DI on the Oasys, you could do the same thing by connecting to your preferred interface via optical spdif, which will give you great recording quality... BUT, depending on what you do, you may have to constantly switch the sync source on your audio interface. For example, I record at 48kHz synced via Oasys ADAT. But I often deliver 44.1kHz audio which I master in Wavelab. Wavelab 7 is very "inelegant" when it comes to switching sample rates on the fly, so I have to change the Saffire to internal sync to monitor playback at different sample rates (and switch off the Oasys internal clock so I don't get digital clock noise coming through the interface when ADAT is NOT the sync source). Running the analog audio outs to your audio interface would eliminate any similar tedious switching.

I've been using relatively inexpensive Hosa optical cables for years and have never had an issue with them. With the Saffire, I have 2 inputs always available for mics for sampling and the foley work I do, and I patch my 2 other hardware synths (Prophet '08 and Casio CZ-1000!) into the Oasys' inputs.

You could easily achieve a similar type of setup with a Duet (which would've been my choice of interface too if only it had MIDI I/O!), although I'm not sure if the Duet has spdif connection.

Thank you, TP.
So far I've tried Setup #1. (I didn't have to buy a soundcard.) It seems to be working! I still haven't tried everything but I can say: the latency is very very low and the sound quality is unbelievable.

I've connected the O via Apogee Duett to a 24" iMac. I had always problems with the digital connection. So I gave up on it and now I am very happy with the sonic result of Duett + O (excellent converters IMHO). I like the Duetts Maestro software which makes it easy to switch between different studio setups (like one for vocals, one for guitars etc.). And Duett + Logic work together very well.
