Patches compatible with kronos
I'm curious what patches are compatible with the Kronos?
Can I download oasys patches and run them? M3? M50? Radias? Triton? MS2000/microkorg? D7? anything else?
I want to start going to the various places and collecting compatible patches on a USB flash drive.

Does it support .ksc and .kmp files as well?Jon Lord wrote:Just the Oasys and yamaha DX7(and some other Yamaha FM synth's) are compatible.
Then it should be compatible with the sampled instruments in .ksf format from oasys/m3/tritons etc I think.
If it supports DX7 does that mean it supports ni fm7/fm8 patches?

I am certainly not an expert, but having spent a bit of time with the manual:
Saving to disk, CDs, and USB media
The following file types can be saved to disk:
• .PCG files Set Lists, Programs, Combinations, global settings, Drum Kits, User Drum Track Patterns, and Wave Sequences . (You can choose which data types are included, via options in the Save dialog.)
• .SNG files Song and region data.
• .KMP files These are Korg format Multisamples.
• .KSF files These are Korg format Samples.
• .KSC files These store collections of EXs Multisamples and Drum Samples, and or User Multisamples and Samples.
• .KFX files Effect preset data.
• .KGE files KARMA GE data.
• .MID files Saves a Sequencer mode song in Standard MIDI File (SMF) format.
• .EXL files System exclusive data from an external device that was saved on the KRONOS. (This allows the KRONOS to be used as a data filer.)
• .WAV and .AIF files: User samples can be exported as WAVE or AIFF files. • .KCD files: These are track lists for audio CDs.
P 173
So it looks like KMP and KSF files are ok.

From the above list, SNG, PCG, and KGE can only load OASYS versions of these files. It can also load all types of everything else on the above list. so no on the M3, M50, etc programs and combis. But you CAN load sample data from any other Korg workstation (KSC, KSF, KMP, etc), including from the Triton and M-series workstations.drchris wrote:I am certainly not an expert, but having spent a bit of time with the manual:

I have a bunch of OASYS programs you can download from
http://www.knect.ie/OASYS.html
they are free for download and use (I would always be grateful for an acknowledgemewnt if any of my programs are used on promoted work - but this is not a requirement to using them - they are totally free for use).
I'd be interested to find out if the Kronos can load and play them - especially the CP80 ones based on the OASYS GM CP80 Sample.
You'll also find a vast archive of DX/FM SYX files that will load into MOD-7
Regards
(you lucky person owning a Kronos !!)

Wow, thanks for the comprehensive list. In terms of wave, I wonder what types it supports. I notice a number of programs don't like 32bit for example, even 24bit. I hope it doesn't just accept 16bit, 48k.drchris wrote:I am certainly not an expert, but having spent a bit of time with the manual:

Again, simply from the manual, not from observation...
p 121:
"When sampling to disk, you can choose either 16-bit or 24-bit resolution. Both 16-bit and 24-bit WAVE files can be used directly in Sequencer mode audio tracks. When loaded as RAM samples, 24-bit WAVE files are automatically converted to 16-bit resolution."
Looks like 24 is ok, 32 is not, but 24 may be "downcoded" to 16 when loaded to RAM.
Hope that helps.

Note that the list there states .PCG files. But PCG is a common file extension used by all of Korg's workstations at least in the past number of years. Doesn't mean the files are actually the same file format/structure or are compatible. They just have similar contents - Program, Combination, & Global data. You can still only load OASYS or KRONOS PCG files.
Same goes for SNG files actually.
KSC, KMP, and KSF have historically been backwards-compatible between workstation lines.

Yo! I know it's been a while this discussion ended, just wanted to add you left out SF2 (soundfont) files, they load nicely into HD-1, and a ton of them can be bought in multiformat CD samplesdrchris wrote:I am certainly not an expert, but having spent a bit of time with the manual:

If you are very serious about sampling etc, you might be better off investing in a software that does some conversions for you.
I am not saying you can't do a lot on Kronos itself, but if you are going to do it time and again then software will pay for itself, in the time saved.
There are lot of free multisamples available in gig, esx, sfz formats that you can import through a dedicated conversion software.
As for FM patches, mod-7 can import the syx banks of 6 operator synths.
I have done a lot of syx banks conversions myself to pcg files that you can find in my signature. Make sure you read the instructions first and backup all your user banks u-a they u-gg, before loading any.
If you want to know contents of these, you can use the pcgtools software for that.
