guess the basis for this Kronos Program

Post by Steve Pavao »

OK - here's a challenge for you.

Here's a snippet of a brief performance using a Program I made on Kronos.

Can you identify the name of the fairly well-known Kronos Program on which my Program is based? It is significantly different from the original, yet it retains some similarities.

I will tell you the goal when I started programming it...I wanted to take what seemed like a bit of a special-effect Program and modify it into a generally useful playable pad that used some of the features of that original Program, but in a more subtle way, even when Karma was running.

Soundcloud's transcoding has degraded this sound pretty measurably, but it should not get in the way of helping someone figure this out.

Happy hunting. :D

Hint: OASYS users may have a distinct advantage in solving this.

OK. The basis for my program was the Polysix Program "Big Sunrise Pad". In Kronos, this Program is at location USER-E 008. (In OASYS, it is at location USER-D 058.)

Stephen Kay demos the Karma aspect of the Big Sunrise Pad Program at the 8:27 mark in the following video:

If you compare his demo to the end portion of my Soundcloud recording in my previous post (which is the portion starting at 0:28 where I have Karma on), you can hear that my version is similar to the original, especially in the "busier sounding" Karma scenes.

My changes to the Program included: I edited the original sound to make it even more pad-like with Karma on, focusing on re-tooling the fast percolating scenes to be more continuous, but toning down the depth a bit, to make it a little more subtle. Also, with Karma Off, I made the pad swampier, and with less attack. I also did work so that when Karma is turned on, the difference between On/Off is more subtle. I wanted something a little more melancholy overall, as opposed to majestic.

Soon, I will analyze both Programs and provide a list of parameters to show you how I got from one to the other to meet the goals I had set out. It might be a fun exercise for some to go through the differences.

It is fun to take a sound which has some aspects that you quite like, and slightly retool it for a compositional purpose, and tone down aspects that might not fit your goals.

The final touch is to pick a name for the Program. I picked "Under the Moors" for 3 reasons. It is a riff on the OASYS Combi Name "The Moors", the sound is very watery/bubbly when Karma is on, and when karma is on, I suppose there's somewhat of a hint of that Enya type of percolating synth sound (though at a much quicker pace), so the name evokes Ireland as well.
