New Novation MiniNova

Post by Johnny Sniper »

So I was looking through Novation's site to look up specs for the UltraNova(considering picking it up), and I come across this:

http://us.novationmusic.com/hardware-synths/mininova

Seems like everyone wants a chunk of the 'micro' market these days.

So I take a look at the specs, and compared to the UltraNova(minus the obvious hardware design) they are almost exactly the same besides a few things:

MiniNova

-Has VocalTune, a feature to change your voice or other instrument(pitch, fx, etc.)
-384 Patch storage
-No aftertouch
-Real time arp editing function

UltraNova

-Built-in USB Audio Interface
-512 Patch storage
-Aftertouch

Price gap isn't too far. MiniNova selling for $499 and UltraNova for $699.

Please correct any info in my comparison.
Hardware: microSTATION, iPad/Dock/Alesis Q49, Arturia MiniLab

Software: Ableton Live Lite Alesis Edition, Pro Tools 10

Nice idea, but I hate this predilection for small keys with a passion. But £299.00 is a decent price.

I don't have small, teeny tiny fingers, and find them impossible to play - I had to give up on my Legacy MS-20 because of that - I'd rather they produced a rack version.

I'm very annoyed that they put the microkorg style arp steps on the miniNova but not the UltraNova rrrrrrrr. The new miniNova does look like a chavved up microkorg though, not sure those big rotaries go with the blue case.

I think this definiteIy warrants some attention, can't wait to check out the videos when I get home. The microkeys def suck, but of course the workaround is to use standard sized keys as a midi controIIer.

Exactly correct, but hey if it gives folks something to complain about it can't be all bad right? :) If any of you people complaining about key size get one as a gift please send it on to me.

It looks suspiciously like someone's taken an R3, shrunk it, given it MK knobs, and painted it blue

Otherwise, the specs look good, comparable to the MK, which is what it's competing against. I'd love to see it available in different colours!

One of these days, Novation is going to have to realize that mono-timbres and plain-jane effects isn't really competitive anymore. I think that day was when the R3 was released, but they keep trying to stretch their same old sheep engine in new wolves clothing. I like Novation synths, but it's hard to get excited about any of their new products when it's obvious that the engine hasn't changed much, if at all.

I think a lot of people are excited about this Mininova!!!
Cheraep that the Korg micro ,Way more powerfull,Way more sounds!! way more interactivities (animate mode and arpegio) Brand new vocoder tuner!!
nice side wood panel! Usb Powered,,and excuse me but if you consider the the synth engine of the ultra Nova old (2 Years) what should we say about the MK (10 years) so all in one I proove that there is a lot to be exited about and I suspect you have no money and bitter as you r u just decide to critizise (without even to have test) like ignorents like to do....
I presonnaly already pre-order and i am very excited ... :D

MiniNova

Post by Ahnyxrik »

I played it today @ my Guitar Center where I work & was happy with it.
Looks GREAT & sounds better than a few other new mini/micro synths I have played, bought or tweaked... IMO ;)

Got the MiniNova yesterday & I like it! Going to use another synth with full-sized keys to play it, though... afraid I am going to bust a key or two...
rest of synth is stable & tight! SOUNDS HOT!!!

Even so, if you've never used a Novation synth, at least it may be a nice entry into their product line. All i own from novation is a launchpad, so people like me are a bit more excited about this than the novation vets.
