Dynamically change drum pattern in live situation
Coming from the MOTIF I always thought it was neat to be able to press on the function keys and change the drum patterns while I was playing to signify different sections.
Is something similar possible on the Kronos, maybe in combo mode?
I have several combos where I am using splits and layers and a drum pattern but would like to be able to switch between different drum patterns when I play live...
I am sure Karma can do something similar (albeit in a clunky way), but was wondering more about the drum patterns already built in.

Re: Dynamically change drum pattern in live situation
it's not possible to do it with the drumtrack button, there you can select only one drumtrack per program or combi. If you want to do it like the way the motif does then you have to use the KARMA system for that. In that case select 4 Drum GE's and route them to the drumkit of your choice.orangefunk wrote:Coming from the MOTIF I always thought it was neat to be able to press on the function keys and change the drum patterns while I was playing to signify different sections.

Then setup the performance settings for that drum GE's.
So assign switch 1-4 to have the possibility to run KARMA module A - D at will. Then create 8 KARMA scenes for every module (ranging from less busy to busy patterns. Then you are done.
when you perform you can select any (or multiple) KARMA module drumpatterns and by choosing a scene you can use the less or more busy drum pattern for that KARMA Module. You can also still use the Drumtrack (for instance only the Kick).
Then you have a killer drum performance combi setup where you can play along with. It can do so much more than the 5 assigned arp patterns at a motif when you dive into the KARMA system this way.
If you set it up the way i've described you have:
4 KARMA modules * 8 scenes = 32 KARMA drum patterns you can choose from during your performance.
If you spent some extra time on programming you can even mix KARMA drum patterns with eachother to create build up patterns for your live performances. You can even mix drumkits like using the Rock drumspatterns from a Studio Kit and combine those with a conga loop from the percussion drumkit and combining those with the kick from the drumkit.
For intros, outros and fills you can use Sound FX samples. just create a HD1 program where you assign samples to each note in the bottom octave with the hold parameter on (one shot samples). Then whenever you need a fill or intro or outro you just hit the corresponding button. On my channel you can find combi demos where i use these kind of tricks as described above.

true, simur wrote:Qui, this is a very good tip. The only problem I see that it is not very fast to create a karma drum pattern. You can do it only with a computer and Karma software, you can't rec a pattern on Kronos for using it with Karma. Right?
but you can use the included Drum GE patterns for this. There is a large amount of Drum GE's available and every GE has 64 pattern variations so there are a lot of drum patterns that you can use.
But if you want to use your own drum pattern then you need the software for the Kronos to do this. (the Motif can do this by converting a pattern to a user arp)

You could also consider using RPPR, moving your performance into Seq mode.

You can change drum patterns while playing by going to the Drum Track and selecting a new drum pattern from the drop down menu - either from the presets or from the User Bank. (Operation Guide page 237) If you use the (safety) 'pin' function to keep the menu open then you can switch from one drum pattern to another without having to reopen the drop down menu. (Thanks to Lou for that tip).
If you use the 'convert to drum track pattern' (in the drop down command menu at top right of screen) you can convert a SEQ track to a drum pattern to create your own customised User Bank drum patterns.

This would be great if you could assign it to the hardware buttons... I have tried this method when performing with a singer at a rehearsal and missed cues all over due to finicky touch screen.
I still think there is a need to have something simpler than delving into Karma... just imagine having a new soft screen with large soft buttons with say 10 different drum parts that you could switch between..

I've always said that really you should be able to tie the drum track pattern selection to the KARMA scene. That way pressing one of the scene buttons would switch the pattern.
It certainly seems possible to change the pattern live but at the moment we're limited to complicated programming or MIDI controllers to send sysex perhaps.
I'll just stick to an Electribe for drums for now..

I'm not at Kronos right now but another somewhat of a hidden feature for the drum track lies on the karma scenes page. Here you have eight switches for the drum track which can be turned on or off per scene. For instance, you have a karma drum module on scene one without the drum track, scene 2 you have the same groove only with the added drum track creating a different rhythm. Then possibly scene 3 just has the drum track playing with the karma drum module switch turned off for that scene. There is much you can do here to vary the drum grooves. This is all activated when switching between scenes in the control panel. Granted, it would be killer if you were able to change the drum track pattern while doing this.X-Trade wrote: I've always said that really you should be able to tie the drum track pattern selection to the KARMA scene. Maybe one for a future upgrade ... almost anything seems possible on this machine
(although presently the drum track runs independantly of everything except the clock and the KARMA on/off function, as Lou described).
