Why are most combis dance trance or similar

Post by miden »

Can anyone explain why pretty much 90% of combis available for the Kronos, seem to be doof doof trance pr dance based?

Or really synthy alternative I really cannot describe it....

Where are the combis for jazz, or straight type R+B, or jazz funk, or even good old r+r or pop/rock even country (not WESTERN!!)

I am finding this really frustrating as a new user still trying to come to grips with programming either combis or Karma setups...it would be nice to be able to buy a minimum library of these styles to at least learn about programming them, or to use a base to develop further..

Am I alone in this view for the Kronos?

I mean it is quite easy to run midi file backing tracks but these can get repetitive and really, can not lead to much creativity on a gig...

Anyway......just musing I suppose :)

Dennis, that means we are getting old already. I do have already Libraries
of NORMAL Combis, with custom GEs, normal stuff like Rock, Jazz, Blues,
Pop similar to regular Styles on a PA arranger but i wont sell or share.
To sell its simply not worth the headache, people do not wanna pay and my
back and eyes are almost gone of working, to share...same reasons.

I had a look but I found nothing along the lines of what I was asking for...I hoped there would be more demos similar to the one you posted here (without the fake voices ;) )...or at least some documentation outlining waht was in the combi packs????if any....

But thanks for the link, it was interesting.

Cheers

SoP. Very cool. Not so much what I'm looking for but who knows. Thanks!

Miden, I know exactly what you mean. I'm not really interested in any of the dance genres at all. I"m pretty much a "rock guy" even if I also play in a county band. Yes, I am old! Heck, even disco bored the crap out of me when it first came out. I never minded good funk though but too much has no real soul as far as I can tell.
I just make my own music up right from the get-go. It seems easier.
If music is the food of love, play on and play loud!
Gear: Kronos 73, Wavestation EX, Polysix, King Korg, Monotron and Monotron Duo, Minikorg, Moog Grandmother, my very old MiniKorg, 4 acoustic and 9 electric guitars, 1 Ibanez 5 string bass, a Steel guitar, a bunch of microphones, 2 pairs of studio monitors and other very cool toys, 1 wife and 4 cats and a lava lamp!

@miden,

just out of interest, is this combi something you like, or are you searching for a more traditional type of jazz?

That's what inspires me on the spot - from the first tune of your video. Great combi! Just jammed along - in my head - when listening to it. Is this an example of your "Magical" sounds series?

Thanks Corgy for the comment, this combi was created over a year ago for my own purpose, but i'm working on a combi sound set at the moment where this is one of the combis that will be used for the final set. However, the final version of this combi is much more produced then this one. It sounds much better (due to the mix levels and different EQ and it contains 8 karma scenes in the final version).

The new combi set will contain different type of combis, i have a huge collection to choose from so i can combine different styles into one set. So there will be a few soul / jazz kind of combis in it which are ment for play along style (just as shown in this video). The hard part
from these combis is that they have to behave like a band that follows whatever you play. That's quite a different setup of combis than the standard ones. For instance in this demo you see me playing chords likes: Major 7ths, 9, ditones, tritones, and much more. Every chord is recognized correctly and the bassline and guitar follows everything i'm doing (even when i don't play with my left hand, for the 'groove part' of the demo). So in this case the combi is the background of the performance instead of leading like the 'kitaro kind' of combis which i also have.

But the main purpose of this video demo was to get an insight in the type of combis people like miden wants to use, since this is a very old combi demo from my own collection it was not intended as a demo of the final combi collection.

I am as allways impressed by your contributions. =D>

If you could come up with such kind of combis I would be happy to purchase. Behaving like a band - that sounds incredible. Do you accomplish this with self made Karma GEs? :D

no, in this case (video) all was done with standard KARMA GE's and some additional KARMA programming on the Kronos itself. So everybody could create such combis without the software when they know how to do it.

If you listen to the video closely then you hear that the bass and guitar follows every chord i'm playing. So in this case i play the Electric Piano on the Full Keyboard, and the 'KARMA band plays along with it'. So it's not a standard left hand chord and right hand split keyboard setup.

The main trick here is that you use a chord play style. So play the melody with added notes for the chord. When i want to play a melody in the scale of that chord, then i hold the chord with the hold pedal, so KARMA knows which basic chord i'm using.

It takes some practice to let KARMA do what you hear on the video, but eventually you will get it. The hard part was to get the correct bass root note with the Ditones and tritones. But this can also be solved in the Kronos without the software.

The final combi collection uses a lot of custom KARMA GEs (which you can also use for your own combis of course). The benefit of custom KARMA GEs is that you can create any pattern that you want, so this was a big help for me to create the combis i had in mind.

Full documentation – which you probably could not find is enclosed to files with Combi demo (zip files with PCG and PDF).

Link: http://soundsofplanet.manifo.com/pcg-demo

On the end of PDF file you will find a table with names of combi and assigned style.
Also have a look to the site www.Korg.com in the shop you can find such combis as : KRS 04 and KRS 05 – maybe these ones would suit you better :)
