MicroKorg: Beginning Synth Books, Tutorials, Etc.?

Post by Niopia »

For Christmas I got my son a microKorg. He's been playing piano for a few years and has gotten fairly good at it. Lately he's been listening to Skrillex and similar music, and he's always been into experimenting with all the voices and effects on his 61 key keyboard. A synth seemed an obvious choice.

Anyway, the manual that comes with the microKorg is pretty dry, so I'm looking for a good beginner synth book.

Hi,

I can not recommend a book. But the internet offers enough tutorials to get some more background on the sound engine of the mK.
The mK is a virtual analog synth. The programs running on the internal DSPs mimic the classical analog substractive synthesizers.
It means some oscillators generating a set of basic waveforms, some filters behind them, and a controlled amplifier, some low freq oscillators to modulate some parameters and some envelope generators.

So Google can help. (tutorial, substractive synthesis). Just took the first youtube which popped up: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=se31yZHNLLI.
Of course, there are lots of synthesizers out there. The main principles are always similar, but you need then to map them back to the features offered by the mK and thus go back to the manual.

Have fun!
