so far, all you've done on this forum is bash the Kronos. If you're not going to do anything else here, go bash the Kronos on the Yamaha forums.
Want "real" sounding violins? check out the video in my signature... those strings are the same as what's in the Kronos (only the Kronos can make them sound slightly better). The Motif is pretty great... for 1998... but it's UI isn't very easy to use, it doesn't have KARMA built into it, and the whole instrument lacks the "sparkle" that HD-1 and EDS offer. Also... wave sequencing is just AWESOME.
can't really say much in defense of the guitars. the samples aren't all that, but the effects that drive them are awesome. I don't do much with nylon guitars... i always thought they were at least half-decent. Everything else is top notch tho, IMHO.

This requirement can be met easily: buy a Motif rack to complement your Kronos.ddavilyx wrote:Hi folks. I have a problem with Kronos. [...] The sounds of the nylons and Steel guitars are not what I expected at all. They don't even compare to the original classic motif.
Every instrument has its strengths and its weaknesses. You can't expect a single synth to meet all your expectations.
Don't give such ridiculous advice.Gargamel314 wrote:so far, all you've done on this forum is bash the Kronos. If you're not going to do anything else here, go bash the Kronos on the Yamaha forums.
Yamaha forums are not made for bashing Korg nor other makes, but for discussing about Yamaha synths and trying to help other Yamaha enthousiasts, just like Korg forums are not made for bashing Yamaha nor other makes.
Last I heard, the Kronos is a sampler. Just put a sample in. As for your guitar chops, why are you playing a patch on a keyboard? Record yourself. Don't tell me the Motif has a great guitar sound either. If you believe that, then you are not picky about guitar sounds. I would hate to hear what you think is a good violin sound. And don't even start to tell me that the Motif has a great violin sound. In fact, the Motif is a pale comparison to the Kurzweil for orchestral sounds.

Gargamel314, I know that the Kronos has more technology. That's not my concern. I was talking about sounds. At the end of the day, no one cares what you use and how you recorded a track. They just want to hear the music. YAMAHA delivers that in a single package. I don't have to plug in a guitar because the guitars are real YAMAHA nylons. I don't need to hire a violinist because YAMAHA makes violins and samples their own violins. I don't have to use any external sounds from anywhere because all the sounds are 100% real . Get it?
See, all of you guys are butt hurt because you haven't had a song that requires solo violins or just plain guitar music. Please understand that I love the Kronos. I'm just saying that the nylons and violins are poor. That's all. So if all you're advising me to do is plug in the real instrument and record it as audio, then truly my arguments are even more right.
Funny thing is most of you just want to diss the motif and say nothing good about it. That is an obvious sign that yall never took your time to listen. KORG has always been eye candy. See, I agree that the Kronos is a new awesome board and I'm loving it, but just not the instruments mentioned above.
Are there libraries somewhere else that I can purchase? because the stock ones are a disgrace.

My 2 cents...soryy for the length.
I'm trying to decide between Kronos and Motif XF.
I'm sure Kronos is a much advanced instrument in technological terms and has lots of potential.
But! this is not a computer I buy today and need it to be strong enough for video games which will come out next year, this has to make nice pleasant sounds - today!
I used to have the Triton and sold it after 6 months - just couldn't come to terms with the sounds - BTW, my old TS-10 is still here, 6mb of ROM, but what a musically sounding instrument!
I've been to a Dream Theater concert 2 years ago, lots of keyboards stuff which sounded very good until Rudes played the Piano parts, I thought, even in 8000$ Oasis, Korg cannot make a piano sounds nice! similar cold bright sound I had in my Triton .
When I thought about buying M3, I told the guy in the store that the M3 piano is not there yet - he said "look at the big picture, this is a workstation, it has to sound pretty good in most stuff, it can't sound good in everything, if you want a really good piano sound - get an electric Piano!"
2 years later and now Kronos is here, and what do you know!? the Pianos are beautiful!, not nice, not close, not dynamic, simply beautiful which is a musical tasteful term and not a technical one.
My point? someone kicked some buts at Korg and said - "I had enough with everyone having better piano sounds then we have, make the best piano sound you can even if you have to play 4GB of samples directly from SSD in order to accomplish that!
My question is, what does it have to take now to get the guitars sound good?
And don't tell me to take guitar lessons, I play keyboards, and this is a fact that Motif guitars sound great, not as good as real ones, but damn right good!
I'm going to test Kronos next weak - maybe I'll get convinced, I didn't buy the XF at the time cause I didn't have money, now that Kronos came out, I though it was a good thing I didn't buy the Yamaha, and I'm really into the potential of Kronos, but it will be a very hard decision to go with it if some of the sounds are not as good.

I use them all the time in concerts. They are my choice for rentals right now. Look, if you really play guitar, then you know how limited and fake a keyboard guitar program sounds. That's just the way it is. You are not going to fool anyone into thinking that it sounds great - especially a guitarist which you said you are.
If you think that the Motif sounds great, then fine. That gives me an indication of what your guitar tone sounds like.

Only a keyboard player would say this. I am not picking on you. What I mean is that if you played guitar, you would realize how you come across. I'm not doubting that you believe that the Motif guitars sound great. More power to you. Get that keyboard if you think it's the right one for you. Everyone has their reasons for what they use. I would love to have a Motif that had enough polyphony and a decent note stealing algorithm. Every time I use the Motifs in concert, I can hear it suffering from polyphony problems. Because of that, I usually ask for 2.

Like I said, I'd really love to have the Kronos, its a much more advanced instrument.
My opinion is based mostly on demos I heard in YouTube and I know its not ideal, yet still, Motif sounds better in these, so I assume that since both demos are heard using the same media, this is still a valid deference, unless all Motif demos were recorded in better studios than Kronos.
I'm not a professional musician so I'm not going to hire a guitar player for my next production, but I've been into music for many years and I have a very trained ear so I think I know how to appreciate a pretty good emulation.
It doesn't have to be a perfect guitar sound - that's only a guitar player can achieve, but it has to sound close enough.
Thanks for you comments, I'll have to go and play a Kronos and let my ears make the final judgments.
Hopefully in a few months, you'll be able to get some demos of a bad guitar sound played on a Kronos, by an amateur player - there is something to hope for!

I dont'care much about guitars. And, to be honest, I dislike yammy sounds (except for acoustic guitars and motorbikes). It's a a matter of taste. Well, we all want to have all the best timbres of the Universe, and so we buy Almighty-workstations-samplers. But, "Please, better guitars" is really the last prayer I'd send. Having said that, I was used to think a great part of guitar's sound stay in its playing way. And I saw interesting Oasys karma-lab video about this.
