Well I played around with the portamento and I was not able to get anything that sounded even close. Our guitar player said he worked something out with his Boss effects pedal and sliding his hand down the neck of the guitar. I will check it on tonight and see how close it is.

I played that song way back in the day with a Roland XP-30 and a Korg Polysix with a MIDI retrofit.
Basically it's just a very typical synth string patch. On the Polysix, I'm sure I used the ensemble effect.
You just layer 2 of the same basic synth string sound together. One has a pitch bend range of 0, the other I believe I had set for a full octave because at the very end of the song when it stopped, I bent it all the way down until the notes "came back together". But for greater control, you could set a smaller bend range. You just have to practice getting smooth with the bends. The wheel on my polysix was easier to keep smooth than a pitch stick I think, even though I'm normally more of a stick fan.
