Thankfully, your opinion is not the only one which counts.

That's pre-v2.0 OS Leslie, a 3 year old video. PC3 had zillions of updates and new features since then, including a lot of improvements in KB3 and Leslie sim. It's on another level now. Did you use the worst possible video available on purpose? It's 240p (extremely low quality), the audio is very quiet, and is not representative at all.

This is a pretty good video, in comparison. This one is even better, since it shows it in a context of live band, it's handling pretty darn well (A Whiter Shade Of Pale is top-notch sounding):

BTW; I've yet to hear any Leslie sim on ANY hardware workstation that tops the one from GSi VB3 VST plugin. Ventilator is damn good, but it's an external pedal, and not built into any workstation.

Nords are overhyped poo in this regard, in my experience.

Oh okay thanks for the clarification. I used your criteria and just picked the first one I could find :p

Well, check the two links I posted above (after a post edit, sorry) and witness the difference.

Nah not doing anything for me. Backing tracks or camera mikes seem to cover up the good & bad. I have more than a passing interest in the PC3X...I told Dave Weiser I'd buy the rack if they built it. Doh!

Devnor wrote:Funny you mention the viability of the PLG cards as additional sound sources. Have you used a PLG board or even heard one? There's a reason they discontinued that item ya know.
Let me ask you, have you heard or used an ARX card before? There's a reason they discontinued them! There is a reason why they suddenly cost 99$ instead of the initial 400$. There is a reason why they stopped after producing only 3 cards. With your logic, they must sound so bad that nobody buys them. But then the question is, why would you buy a jp80 with that same sounds (brass and e.piano at least). If supernatural technology sounds so great, why Roland produced just three cards, stopping after drums, e.piano and brass?

Devnor wrote:How many can you use without the sound cutting off when changing patches?
You can use 16 sounds and change between them without cutting off. It has absolutely nothing to do with effects.
Devnor wrote:Can you switch between them with a footswitch? I spent at least an hour attempting to resolve these issues after I bought my XF7 with Tony Escueta (Yamaha product manager here in Dallas TX). Your experience is?
I'm sorry to hear that Dallas or the US has so incompetent product managers. It must be a friend from Dan Krisher. (Sorry if my joke insulted your feelings about him.)
Had you asked me, I would told you in one minute that you can't switch seamlessly between sounds in the classical way, neither buy switching between performances manually nor using a foot switch. You can't because it's not part of the Motif design, regardless which version we're talking about. And I don't even own a motif right now (had one before) and I'm not even a product manager. My experience if fine, thank you.
Devnor wrote:There's no overdriven Hammond sound in the JP80? Really? Wanna check that one again?
No, there is no overdriven Hammond sound which would be usable. It's possible that there is a pcm based, recorded with distortion. It may sound overdriven, but it doesn't behave anywhere near to how a real overdriven organ sounds. The overdrive effect changes depending on the number of keys pressed. The overdrive effect changes when an effect block is used, depending on how many keys you press. This gives the sound a variation and a special effect. You almost don't hear the overdrive when playing a part with one note, but the overdrive jumps in more prominent when you start pressing more keys at once. That has nothing to do with reproducing hammond samples where the distortion is part of the sample.
In the same way, a hammond multisample where the rotary effect is sampled into the organ sample doesn't behave at all like an organ sample which goes thru a separate rotary effect. If you play sampled organs where the rotary speaker effect is part of the sample, and if you trigger different notes but not simultaneously, each note will trigger the sample with the rotary recorded on the sample and you'll get 3, 4 or more notes on which the rotary starts at different times. It is not in sync like on the real thing. Because it's not in sync, it sounds totally washed out.
And if you think that I'm nitpicking again, just keep in mind that there are people being more concerned about how an organ sounds than having the ultimate violin sound.
Devnor wrote:Your "concern" seems a little fake and I suppose just another form of personal insult.
I don't have any single reason to insult you or anybody else. We are talking about the technical side of keyboards which were taken into account by Dan Krisher. I see him being wrong in what he states about the structure of the performance mode and the registration mode. No more, no less.

Devnor wrote:Nah I don't need the Jupiter to sample or play sequences and I don't use vocoders. These things aren't part of the Jupiter's "mission". Neither is having a panel full of knobs & switches...deep editing is only a few touches away and there are powerful new yet still misunderstood controllers. Not every musical situation needs massive FX chains.
Yes, that's a great one! So, you can't stop reminding me about the impossible seamless switching on the Motif, but my arguments are not really arguments because you either don't need them or they are not part of the jp80's mission?

Understood. Too bad the rack isn't possible, they would have to re-engineer all the PCBs because they're not made to fit into a rack. And that would take budget and time, and racks are ultimately a dying breed lately, so they'd be at a loss. I'd rather see the next big thing from Kurzweil sooner, than have a rack (although, the prospect of having 256 layers of polyphony is intrigueing, for sure...)

OFF TOPIC

Not offended at all - and knew you're weren't trying to offend; would be a boring world if everyone agreed on everything!

Hmm yes as my "incompetent" Yamaha product manager likes to tell people "nobody buys rack synths these days" I do have hope Kurzweil will be considering the rack mounted case for whatever they have cooking in R&D.

Sani you just can't stop with the insults including product managers who work with PRO ARTISTS so I guess our conversation will need to end here. You've clearly over estimated the capabilities of the Motif performance engine in your need to find anything and everything wrong with a simple video.

At this stage of the game we're talking about full featured sounds complete with FX settings. Not a single voice sharing FX. That is song mode. The performance mode in which Dan is referring to can hold FOUR of these sounds - complete with their programmed FX. You can seamlessly switch between them using only the lower row of buttons (think they call it PART, maybe something else I dont care).

UPS delivered my Jupiter this afternoon so I think I will be busy for a while. Let me leave you with a positive Jupiter 80 statistic:

The Jupiter 80 boot time is 15 seconds.

Go make some music. Peace out!

Ooh that pic is making me pine for the EX5 rack,I've owned 2 of those sold the last one earlier this year as it wasn't being used so much now as I used to gig with it and 2 Tritons, bloody heaviest and deepest rack synth going it's a big rack and probably as heavy as some synths

.....I managed to drop the first one after taking it out of the rack and it fell on it's face and cracked the circuit that houses the front knobs due to them protruding was still useable just the knobs were useless(and yamaha no longer stock the parts I needed,so it was sold for spares) but I do miss it,it has some great acoustic guitars in and coupled with a breath controller for the woodwinds oooh heaven, such an underrated synth the Ex is...(shame about a few of the bugs)Will defo get another in the future

Should have my Jp soon,15 seconds to boot

I thought Oasys took some time to boot until Kronos came on the scene....

Kronos boot time is longer than some tracks I've written
