For KRONOS/OASYS and CUBASE I'm afraid only!

Post by methusala »

Hi,

I think this can be done but I would dearly like someone to confirm it and help me on the way to do it.
I've recorded some melodies (some with Karma, some without) from a Combi into my DAW. They are recorded only in one instance or patch.
Can I in the DAW (I use Cubase) then separate out each timbre into its own instance or patch so I can work on each as needs be.
I should really, I suppose, arrange Cubase so I have 16 instances (covering for the 16 maximum timbres in the K or O) open before recording.
Anyway, is there anyone who can help me opening 16 separate tracks in Cubase after I've done a recording.

I'm not entirely certain that you can do this. I think you have to first have the 16 tracks in Cubase set up and armed to record.

Are you talking about midi recording or actual audio recording?

I'm talking of MIDI. Could I do it by somehow duplicating my track 15 times, then change the MIDI assignment for each track depending on what you want it to play from the Kronos/Oasys.

this is very easy in cubase.
- just add 16 midi tracks in your cubase inspector
- In the cubase inspector: in midi track 1 select Kronos Keyboard for the midi out channel
- in the cubase inspector: in midi track 1 select Midi channel 1
- In the cubase inspector: in midi track 2 select Kronos Keyboard for the midi out channel
- in the cubase inspector: in midi track 2 select Midi channel 2
- In the cubase inspector: in midi track 3 select Kronos Keyboard for the midi out channel
- in the cubase inspector: in midi track 3 select Midi channel 3
- do this for all 16 midi tracks

Now in the kronos go to combi mode
- select an empty combi
- set Timbre channel to 1 for the timbre 1
- set timbre channel to 2 for the timbre 2
- set timbre channel to 3 for the timbre 3
- etc. Till all 16 channels are filled
- Now save the combi with the name Cubase Template

- Then select a piano for timbre 1
- then select a bass for timbre 2
- then select a drum for timbre 10
- etc

- Save the combi again on a different position with the name of the song you are working on

Now go to cubase
- select midi track 1
- you will hear the piano
- record a phrase
- select midi track 2
- you will hear the bass
- record a phrase
- select midi track 10
- you will hear the drums
- record a phrase

If you hear the sound double when recording the phrases then you have to disable to local on checkbox in the kronos global settings. The downside of this is that karma doesn't work anymore (you can't record it in the daw), so it's a matter of choice if you want to do this.

Now if you have the analog outputs your kronos connected to your sound card, then you can route the outputs in cubase in the Cubase connection window. The benefit of this is then when you render your song (in realtime) to a wav file, then cubase can blend vst's, Effects and the kronos together in your wav file.

I've explained a lot of detailed settings for all kind of integration earlier on this forum. If you want to know more about this, then search this kronos forum for the word Cubase and author QuiRobinez

you will find lot's of extra information this way about daw integration.

QuiRobinez,

I am very grateful for the time you have taken to reply here! I will set too- and go back over past posts.

In passing, can I say that I have been viewing your YouTube tutorials on the K and am slowly working through the sound sets. I don't have the K yet but your enthusiasm for it might well tip the balance as Steve McNally's Oasys demonstration did for me on the Korg website all those years ago. My main insterest is in the orchestral sound sets to get as far as possible away from synthy renditions--The O had a woodwinds and brass update which I still turn to frequently--have they been carried through to the K as well as the string sections or have these all been re-mastered for the K? If they have, I may well be finding a K2!

good to hear, but most of the kronos videos i've made are almost the same on the oasys, So the tutorials also applies in most cases to the oasys, so you don't need a kronos for that.

My focus lies more on the ambient / electronics site instead of the orchestral, but that's the beauty of the kronos and oasys, they can do both styles realy well, it's just a matter of preference :)

There is a separate EXS file on the kronos for the woodwinds and brass sounds, it's not loaded by default, but if i recall it correctly it was available on the SSD. Also KARO has some great sound sets available for orchestral type of sounds.

Yes, I have KARO's Strings and Brass library (as well as their Philharmonic lib) for the O which they brought out after that O up-date.

Good to have exchanged these posts with you. If I have any follow-up questions, would you prefer I pm you so as not to waste any time or to post here?

I just wish it was as easily done as you make it sound. I do realize it's just me but for some reason I can easily get track/midi track on channel 1 to work perfectly. But for the nest tracks, I seem to have difficulties. I can't get them to always work. It's late now so I'm going to bed but if you have a way of walking me through the process I will be eternally grateful!
