How do I load 3rdprty sounds to specific user banks?

Post by Chopin's11th »

Newer kronos user here. I've managed to understand how to load the 3rd party sounds recently purchased. I purchased two different libraries, one was piano's and the other was nylon stringed guitars. Once I successfully loaded the guitars, they appeared in the "UG" bank. Then when I tried to load the pianos using the same method, the pianos loaded over top the guitars. I chose to append them but this did not happen.
I understand that it is possible to load sounds to the banks you wish to have them in, but I don't understand how that is accomplished. I own a Kronos X with the latest software download (sorry forget the software version as I'm not in front of it).
More appropriately, how can I load these sounds to specific slots or banks?
And would I need to do the entire set of sounds at once, or could I put them in a different order?
(the sounds are from K-Sounds if that matters).

Start off with an entire .pcg save of your banks before your load and save anything.
There is User bank G and then there is User bank GG.
I recently loaded a 3rd party bank and it appeared in U-GG, but i have the new Kronos with 3.0.4 installed.
U-G came preloaded on mine with an organ set and U-G doesnt even show up on my factory prelaod files. GM and g(d) banks seem preloaded on mine also but dont appear on my factory preload files either.
Hmmm. I think GM and g(d) banks may be locked in and different application somehow because they dont show up in disk mode factory files and they are limited to a few other banks that they can write into in program mode.
Any way, make an entire .pcg save before any start of loading or changes.
It seems User G and User GG banks are the default banks for loading third party sounds. Makes sense for not risking overwriting random banks. Easier to know only one bank is open to be overwritten by thrid party files and maybe that bank is tied into sytems that protect from incoming corrupting data also.

Once the new U-G or U-GG bank is loaded/saved to disk or media .pcg file, then from within that .pcg file you can select that U-G bank and select load for that file.
The prompt box will appear right after selecting load and that will offer you options to specify where to load the bank. It will say bank U-G and will show below that what bank to load it to. You can select the load to bank option and it will list what banks are available to load into. Know what banks you want and have free for it and input that and then proceed to load.

You will now have U-G content in U-G bank of program mode and also the same content in whatever bank you loaded into from the U-G bank file in disk mode.

Now you are free to over write U-G bank with the next incoming 3rd party file that will write by default into U-G file everytime even if you try to file it elsewhere.

Key thing is to save the file in disk mode and then transfer the content out of U-G bank to another banks via the disk mode load function, before loading in any more and hoping append will happen.
U-G banks should be treated like portal banks and dont store things in that "door way" or they will get plowed over by new comers every time.

What i do because of how few 3rd party banks i bring in ,and my over all small workflow, is i make an entire .pcg file save under a new .pcg file name for any major changes i make to my .pcg set up. That way i have on file the previous .pcg setup as well as the new one and then i have the factory .pcg file locked and not involved in any .pcg saves.
So i always keep around 3 .pcg files under three names and one is the factory .pcg that stays untouched, while the other two stay and are used to condense any future .pcg saves into as i edit, grow and manage my collection.
32gb usb mini stick took forever to format "full FAT32" but it is huge storage for sound files and i can afford to have 32 or more entirely different .pcg saves under different file names and still have room left for song saves and more. And thats if i choose to ignore the 32gb available on internal drive memory.
When in doubt, make a .pcg save under an entirely new file name and start on the next. Files can always be later selected from disk mode right down to banks slots or entire banks one by one from various files, on various media and the internal disk, and loaded strategically into the ready modes of the workstation. Then that can be saved again as an entirely new comprehensive .pcg file or other files tailored to your need.
Keep factory files locked and use duplicates and even duplicates of duplictes to expand.
So much memory on kronos and usb flash these days, its no problem backing up the entire collection of banks on the kronos just to preserve a single bank.
When i save .pcg, i save all. Programs and combis are made up of files that can come from .ksc and .kge files and i had an issue where is did a .pcg overwrite to a previous .pcg file and i figured i would just select to include only the programs and combinations in the .pcg save/overwrite because i had only made changes to the programs. But when i loaded it again, my drum tracks were askew in program where i had edited before saving .and some tracks in Combi i had edited before were askew. Oh and some other few programs i had written into open/intitialized slots for later use were changed.
I didnt include drums and wave sequences in the .pcg save and that caused issues because my programs and combis are built out of wave sequences and drum tracks. Any way i was able to figure it out the hard way by exploring every parameter i had edited before and found only wave seq. and drums in a few places were off. Worth it to find out the hard way to know every detail affected and that way remember why .pcg saves automatically include drum and wave seq. in the files saved.

HD-1 programs and EXi programs are also a thing to watch for when banking sounds. HD-1 sounds are limited to certain banks and certain parameters are limited to certain sounds. This has to do with HD-1 being too much for some banks, Exi is more flexible to move around through banks, its some EXi banks that won't take HD-1 sounds. The 9 synth engines mean they can act a bit like 9 different synthesizers and so some have parameters that others dont have and they have some similarities that are displayed differently in terms of virtual control surfaces. Its hard to tell what synth engine a sound is coming out of when i scroll through the banks, but i see variations in the parameter suites attached to various sets of sounds, and thats where i guess the details of the synth engines come out.

The above explanation is already very detailed.

The GM banks (GM program bank and the 8 or 9 drum banks g(d)) are stored without the possibility to change. This is to make sure all synths supporting GM sounds always sound (somewhat) similar. These banks are not stored in a PCG file.

All other banks are stored in PCG files, for program banks:
* I-A to I-G
* U-A to U-G
* U-AA to U-GG

Officially the I stands for Internal and the U for User, but in practice any program can be stored in any bank, except that banks can EITHER store HD1 program OR EXI programs, but not mixed.

You can load a bank in any program bank, however, when combis are involved a problem might arise when not storing them to the Original location. E.g. if you have a combi that refers to program U-G000 and you load that program at the U-F bank, than that combi will still point to U-G000 (which may or may not contain a program).

Therefore, you can use e.g. PCG Tools which can copy/paste between PCG files and keeping synchronization intact. Also you can copy only certain programs instead of a bank (or the tedious manual one-by-one moving).

However, in all cases: always make a backup.

My gratitude to Michelkeijzers and 19naia

Wow, thanks to the both of you so much! I am indebted. I want to apologize for such a long winded post. I just started and couldn't stop. It is also because the Kronos has so many things to think about/learn.

Michelkeijzers, I see what you mean now about the possible “combi” problem that could/would occur if you loaded sounds to other banks. It would select the original path and whatever instrument was residing there would be used instead of perhaps the one that is supposed to be used. I more or less play everything in real-time when doing “jingles” or excerpts for the little amounts of commercial work I’ve managed to obtain. I don’t use the combi’s in the sense of the preset “grooves” they have for creating much of my musical excerpts (if I have said this correctly…I’m a little ignorant to all the acronyms and names for the actions in Kronos). I’ve run through them and have been entertained by some of them but my disposition is that of a performer rather than someone who knows how to incorporate things in using combo’s etc. I did have something similar to that happen before (many years ago) with the Roland Fantom X I owned then. If the program/combi points to an instrument that’s not supposed to be there it does jolt you pretty quick when calling up a “combi” and instead of say a soft string section, it plays a… a cowbell lol.

19naia, I now see how important it is to save your current set up prior to loading new sounds and also did wonder why UG/UGG were used and thought the same thing (in my previously more ignorant state) that it may be some sort of “safe?” bank by which all 3rd party sounds go, etc. “U- G banks should be treated like portal banks and dont store things in that "door way" or they will get plowed over by new comers every time”. I now understand what is happening (and you’ve made the perfect metaphor) for what I previously couldn’t explain. Making an entire .pcg file save under a new .pcg name as well as having saved the entire .pcg previous to this is something I hadn’t done yet and something that has come back to bite me because of it. Makes sense, just like saving on a computer to back up your previous settings and store the new ones. (I am not at the Kronos currently so I don’t have the visual aid to compliment your method/instruction). I now can’t think of anything else lol… Seems to be such a longgg time from the time I get to read this and the actual time I will be in front of the Kronos. Your reply is so well versed, you’ve caused me to leave the office early. I own a small business here in Phoenix and while I don’t particularly answer to a superior, I do suffer some as I have no one to do “my work” in my absence, but after reading this…lol who cares. I’ll be headed home because of it. Thank you so much.

“So i always keep around 3 .pcg files under three names and one is the factory .pcg that stays untouched, while the other two stay and are used to condense any future .pcg saves into as i edit, grow and manage my collection” (Key to survival and organization I agree). I suppose I should think a little more in terms of handling 3rd party files and the Kronos more similar to how one would do so with a laptop/computer). “figure it out the hard way by exploring every parameter i had edited before” I have had to do this same thing. (this is going to sound a little overkill but I previously did not know to do these things or how). …but I used to write down all the parameters in detail on index cards for fear of losing everything each time I turned the Kronos off. I even left the thing on for weeks because I didn’t know how to properly save my files.
I’m going to give it a whirl as soon as I’m in front of the Kronos, employing what I’ve learned from you guys and will post my findings/efforts after I complete what you’ve just taught me.

Again, thank you, I am blown away with the intelligence here. It’s not like any other forum I’ve been on before with all the riff raff and seeming illogical syllogisms that go hand in hand with other places. I now am indebted and will most certainly focus on the task at hand but also to thoroughly learn these new things so that I may be able to do what you’ve just done, for someone else possibly. I’m a little hesitant right now as I feel like a “taker” instead of what I’d like to be more of, a giver or one who can add value to the Kronos forum by tapping into my own knowledge.
I would like to say that the sounds I recently purchased from K-Sounds (the Signature Piano and the Nylon Strings Guitar) are a league above that which I’ve heard in the past and that of which were already in my stock Kronos. The gentleman that works for K-Sounds, “Kevin Spargo” was readily available and also answered questions in detail as you guys have done here.

PS: 19naia – I noticed you have 23 posts here. I wanted to ask you how you learned all this. I ask because it helps me balance the learning curve by concentrating my efforts in a way that includes using the guides, hands on, and this forum in a way that puts them into a sort of order of approach. I also just noticed you have been on this forum since the tail end of 2012 so I imagine it’s been a compilation of everything by which you have learned all this and more.

PSS: Again, when I’m able to get in front of the beast again (Kronos) I will have printed off what you both have said and set up the sounds in a much more informed way. I’ll perhaps do a little more by also posting my experience(s) to this thread once I’ve successfully managed to not only just “do” what has been explained in good detail here, but also to “understand” the how’s and why’s by re-reading as much as it takes from both of your posts and any others that may appear subsequently thereafter despite if I’ve already conquered the tasks at hand.

Good on you here Chopin's 11th. Trust me when i say i read your question and explored it and it was easy for me to approach and i learned a new detail or at least clarified it for myself by jumping into it for you. That made me happy to reciprocate in your favor if it could be. I enhance my learning in this too.

Well first off trust me when i say even I got stumped on simple things like finding the media info details about how much disk capacity i have and how much is available.
I was so bogged down with trying to get ahead with the many other details i needed to learn and still have to learn from the kronos. Include actually playing the thing and putting together my chops and compositions.
Imagine a workstaion that wore you out just getting around it's heaps of system magic and no energy left to simply sit and tickle the tune out of the keys at the end of the day. haha. not quite there on kronos, but the thought crosses me.

I had a Korg Triton Extreme for 5 years starting back in 2007 or 08, and there is all of the stuff from the triton extreme that ended up making the Kronos. The Oasis came inbetween and i was in no shape to get Oasis in it's day.
Any way, the bank system with slots and file management system seems all too familiar from how it was on the triton. Maybe now its just expanded banks options and content as well as bank categories to support Karma and then new places that all the banks of patterns,ge,wave seq, samples can pop up to offer options on the kronos in ways that didnt happen on the triton.
RPPR is familiar from triton as well as sampling and so on.
I havent had to read up on bank and file management on the kronos yet, which helps when there is so much more to read up on. Every thing i know from the Triton is carrying over to the basics of Kronos.
I was following the kronos also for years before getting my new one barely a month ago. I was glad to find QR and others on youtube and here on the forum, and needless to say i get a lot of info from the forum.
I found it easier and more retentive for me to explore the keyboard and try to make things happen out of the parameter options wherever i can dig them up throught the physical system, and then go to the parameter and operation guides with any specific hangups or mind fog. Cause the pages and pages are enough to get buried in if you dont go first with a specific query to expand on. And most times i go to youtube first to see if i can find someone visually walking me through just what i need. After all that, the parameter guide then starts to make perfect sense and fills in little details here and there that the forum experts and youtube videos leave out ,cause its taken for granted in the heaps of stuff they know while trying to make a quck and easy comment or video.
By now i can read the guides without feeling like a foreigner who doesnt get the gist. I still haven't into programming KARMA with my own stuff and havent gotten into the sequencer yet. I brushed through them and found nothing too strange.
There are people here who get into details that aren't found on the kronos guides. "Third party" possibilities with the kronos go beyond just bank content. There are software editors and software to support the kronos software ,and i have never dealt with that before anywhere. Glad to be exposed to it here though because there may be a day i grow out of my limits of today and will want to expand beyond the kronos content.
I read a lot of the questins on the forum without answers to give, but i follow them and explore them on my kronos if i dont already know about it or if its an issue that applies to me. Some things i would never know to think of or explore if i didnt see some of the questions on here even if they never get answered.
