Tone-wheel organ and rotary lovers....

Hi again,
This keyboard gets better by the minute.
One of my passions is Hammond B3/Leslie - I was hanging out for the PA4X to have improved this but was a little disappointed....
I found that when selecting the DRAWBARS organ, turning off leakage, harmonic percussion, rotary etc to hear the basic tone there was a faint "vibrato" still.
Well - stupid me - all I needed to do was check out the effects and YES, there is the Vibrato/Chorus effect "ON" - now I have pure "Hammond" to play with.
Getting some very nice configs now for numbers like "Don't Dream It's Over", "Whiter Shade..." etc....
Thought I'd share this in case anyone else is as mentally paranoid about Hammond/Leslie emulation.
Whilst raving on here, thought I'd also mention that this PA4X is destroying the need for my other keyboards!!!
Played Kurzweil strings (Seattle Symphony Orch samples) next to my PA4X - barely any difference.
Will consider selling up some gear if this comparison continues....
Cheers
Pete

Hate to say I told you so...no, on second thought I don't. I TOLD YOU SO!

Enjoy the PA4X. I certainly am enjoying mine!

Good to hear as I am considering one. Are you using the EC5 pedal

Yes - EC5 is GOLD - never without it - on my second one now, my first one developed an intermittent pedal after 16 years use!!!
PA4X is a magnificent machine - I was so excited and happy with my PA3X-76 - best keyboard I've ever owned and thought that it would be difficult to be as excited about the PA4X - I knew I'd "like" it BUT had not expected it to be so superb.
It IS an outstanding keyboard - think I already love it as much as my PA3X.
Go get it - you'll not regret it
(Any questions happily answered if I can)

Pete, thanks for the insight. I am also a Hammond aficionado. I also use a Kronos with my show band and the Pa4x for Ceremony and Cocktail hour gigs. I'm the opposite, I rather use the Kronos for my main band gigs. I find the sound choices much more appropriate. That's just my preference. I do LOVE the Pa4x more each and every day. I love the fact I can set up the same multisamples between the two boards and have the Pa4x as a backup for the Kronos.

One of the big disappointments for me with Korg have always been the naff sounding organs. Years ago (too many) when I played in bands I had a A100 Hammond pushing two 145 Leslie's so I do know what a Hammond sounds like and the only near close to the sound has been through a Yamaha. OK want a Hammond dont buy Korg BUT if Yammie can do it why not Korg apart from the fact they may not want to and keep their own very identity. It doesnt matter (in my opinion) how much you mess with the drawbars it doesnt crack it. Now Pete if you have found something that might then great. Do you have anything to add? Johnnie

If it is the Leslie sim, I run a Neo Vent from the sub out on some of my keyboards.

Interesting to see these comments about the Pa4x drawbars and parameters. I am also a Long time Hammond Organ owner and Player, I have had many C3s and A100s since 1969 along with a few Ms and have used Leslies like the 145, 147, 122, 122RV and some of the Proline 760 models.
Although I still have a couple of A100s in my possession a 64' and 72 Model and a few 145s I seldom gig with these nowday's unless there is a specific requirement for it and the logistics and money is right. To that end I use a Crumar Mojo either on its own or with a real Leslie and the result is close enough to not matter. Enter the Pa4x, now as has been pointed out I also noticed that Vib effect and got rid of it on the Drawbar Preset bank I have created. My big thing with the Organ Model is that why an earth did Korg not put the Chorus/Vib controls on the drawbar page along with the controls to customise it ? The Mod effects for the Chorus/Vib are the fly in the ointment for me but having said this in the mix of the Pa4x as an arranger or in a band setting you can easily get by with the organ sounds and onboard rotary. I might when I get time patch in my ventilator and see how that sounds.
I have my first gig approaching with the Pa4x and have been busy arranging a set lists for this job. After three months and many many hours spent with the Pa4x the Keyboard is capable of replacing other boards I have and with a new Trio on the way the Pa4x will be the only board on stage providing backing tracks, live sounds to work with two other musicians and singers.
distortion in drawbars

I seem to hear distortion when trying to play drawbar organ sounds. As you I have removed the vibrato, and noise but the sound is still distorting. Any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong?

You aren't doing anything wrong - it is the FX that you need to adjust.
Let me know if you need assistance...

Thanks for your reply Pete. I thought that would be the answer but I cannot find the fix

If you would help me through I would appreciate it. I am a new Korg owner but have had keyboards and organs forever, my main instrument being a Yamaha EL900 organ. I love the pa4 but need to learn its finer ways of doing things!!
Thanks again

Hi Warren - sorry slight Freudian slip - I think I know what you are referring to (not FX!!):-
OK so bring up a style and lets say you want the DRAWBAR organ as UPPER1 sound.
Select the DRAWBAR organ for UPPER 1 and YES - you get this grinding sound like distortion - I think you'll find it is the DRAWBAR organ settings
So with your DRAWBAR organ screen select the "Tone Noise" tab on the right....
Now uncheck "Leakage" (this is the "noise" I think you may be referring to) and maybe also uncheck the key-on/key-off noises too to suit your taste - you should now have a nice clean tone wheel organ sound.
Hope this helps
Pete
