Is the whining similar to feed back? Have you tried a different mic or does it do it with all mics tried? Is your mic dynamic or condenser? Does your mic need phantom power?

Do you know what the pickup pattern is like on your mic?

The Shure Unidyne 3 was the precursor to today's SM57 and is currently known as a "Vintage" mic. It is possible that it might be feeding back due to a loose component in the mic. It happens when they get older (or get dropped).

If there is a way you could test it against another mic, you'll know quickly if it's your mic or not. Take it into a music store to test it if you don't have another mic at home.

If that is the only mic you use, it may not be outrageous to try a new Shure SM57 to make that test and then you'll at least have a backup. If you use it for vocals only you also might want to tryout a current Shure SM 58 or an Audix OM 3 Dynamic mic which is made specifically for great vocal performances without breaking the bank. Try all 3 side by side and pick the one that sounds best to you.
