can i loop record while punching in and out of record mode at whim or do i have to stop the sequencer every time?
i would like to just start the sequencer (in loop mode), and as inspiration strikes, be able to hit the record button and lay down whatever comes to mind...and then just as spontaneously be able to disengage the recording function and have the sequencer keep firing away

i ask this because i would like to buy a kronos and having this functionality would make the deal for me!

Well here's the order you'd take

1 Record track(s) you want to loop
2 Choose track(s) you want to record
3 Record while you playback loop(s)
4 Go back to 2 to record more tracks

Pretty close to what you need!

Kronos has a Loop single track as well as Loop All tracks.

Loop options should let you specify the range, however to record you have to press the rec write and then Sequencer start stop button.

I you think that you could jump between playback and recording on the fly, then that does not work.

however if you start in record mode then you can do with loop recording,
like in overdub, overdub or manual punching (through foot switch).

You can either do a loop record or auto punch in (pre defined zones) but not both simultaneously.

for this specific kind of thing Ableton is, even now, just one little step ahead. So : in the wish list !

The sequencer can loop timbres, but punch in punch out like a workflow as on loopstations doesn't really work on a kronos. For that you need alternative solutions like:

- if you have an iPad, just connect it with the kronos through usb and buy the app Loopy HD, works flawlessly.

- as the previous poster said, working with ableton as a loop station to the kronos is a perfect solution for the workflow you want.

So if you want to do something similar on the kronos only, then the kronos is not the workstation for you, the sequencer is more song based than pattern based. But if you are willing to embed the computer or iPad then it works (but that would work with any synth)
