MOD-7 Programming

From what I understand, the MOD-7 is basically a DX-7. A sysex dump from a DX7 librarian can be understood by the MOD-7 engine, and reproduce equivalent sounds.

Here's the issue. I don't have my old DX-7 sounds in an electronic format. I was very old school (and didn't have a computer) when I played the DX-7, so I entered in the parameters by hand. and wrote them down on Yamaha's forms. (Does anyone remember buying books of DX-7 patches?)

Can I enter those parameters directly into the Kronos? If not, and I don't see Korg continuing such an unfriendly input method if they can avoid it, can you recommend a DX-7 librarian program with CAN have the parameters entered in directly which will also send the patch to the Kronos?

I've looked in both the operator's manual as well as the editor manual and neither of them address programming the MOD-7 engine specifically.

Old DX7 soundsets are available on internet as sysex midi files, and they can easily been transferred to Kronos, 32 patches at a time, you should read the manual on this subject. Entering individual parameters of a DX7 patch one by one by hand is tiresome but surely possible and more straightforward than the original DX7 with its poor interface. On the other hand, MOD7 is so much more than the DX7. DX7 compatibility is only a small subset of what MOD7 is capable of.

It was tiresome but that's how I did it back in the Bad Ol' Days.

Can the parameters be entered directly into the Kronos? It looked much more GUI in the manual. Easier to create sounds, but not for moving parameters from a printed source.

You have to download the Parameter Guide. There are 48 pages about MOD-7. Me too I'm interested in the classic DX7 FM sounds in the Kronos environment. I discovered that Kronos use the TIME parameter in the envelopes, instead of the RATE...I don't know why, but the result is not the same...

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

I don't know why, but I was imagining that the Parameter Guide was basically the MIDI Implementation Chart. THIS is the information I was looking for, but couldn't figure out why it wasn't in the manual.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

You're welcome. You're welcome. You're welcome. :-)

Please tell me if you find some information about the rate lack and differences between the Kronos Time and DX7 Rate...

hi fcoulter, I'm also a long time fan of DX sounds. I have myself a DX7II, a PLG150-DX and a TG77.

I can tell you without doubt that you can find ANY DX7 patch ever (at least commercially) created online. I can also help you locate specific banks.
Why would you want to program them yourself, if you can load them and then edit to your liking?
tell me if there's anything I can do to help.
