Kronos Tips & Tricks: 04 Change dry sounds with external

Here's a new tips and tricks video.
This time a small demonstration how you can modify kronos sounds with external effects. The Kronos dry sounds can be a great sound source when you route them to external effect machines that have different kind of effects that aren't in the kronos. By applying other type of effects your familiar sounds can sound rather different.

This tips and tricks video shows some examples of what you can do with the dry kronos sounds when you route them through an external effect. In the examples here i use an Eventide H9 Max guitar pedal (which also can be used for synth sounds of course).

There i have access to 44 different algorithms, in this video i show a few of the like the Shimmer algorithm (which add harmonic tones in a reverb hall). a resonator effect, a chorus type of effect and a huge hall through the blackhole algorithm.

First you hear the dry sounds, then the same sound with the effect set to active, then the dry sound again.

The eventide h9 max is activated through a blue tooth connection with the h9 control app on the ipad. When its activated you will see a light turned on at the left bottom of the effect hardware box.

Now for the video i use the H9 Max, but you can do the same with any effect, or when you route the sound to a DAW (sequencer) you can use any of the DAW effects to modify the sounds. It's a fun thing to experiment with your existing sounds and use other type of effects.

Thanks for the video. Interesting, but given the price of the Eventide hardware I think I can get the FX I like from Reactor's Space reverb.

I also dislike the limited display on the Eventide. Sure you can use an iPad to edit I suppose and see the full names on that but...

Awesome Qui, thanks.
Fantastic Demo.

I've made my decision and it's the Space which suits me better.
There's more than enough for my requirements. I want to avoid software/iPad etc.

Picture this.

Kronos 73 with a Roland 404 sampler on the right end a Streichfett on the left end. A Blofeld above the Kronos, with just enough room on the right hand side of the Blofeld for a Space. That's my set up, once the Space comes.
I've a Tascam DP24 SD too, so there's so much room for subtle additions here and there and some deep journeys.

I would have my Space already but a music store tried to rip me off. PayPal are refunding my money next Friday, so then I will drive to a shop and buy it over the counter

Best wishes

absolutely, just use any external effect that can give you the sound that you want. For instance, i use the kronos a lot with ableton's Granulator (as a live source input) and with the Grain engine in omnisphere 2. Also i use some of the antares VST effects on the kronos. But that would be too complicated to show in a tips and tricks video. So based on some of the discussions on the board about enventide i used the h9 as an example.

But you can use any effect of course.

that's a fantastic setup!
I think the space will be the perfect companion to your gear.
The shimmer and blackhole algorithms from the video are also in the eventide Space.

Looking forward to your songs with it :)

Thanks a lot,
I bounce off some stuff to puter just to put on some vst processing(taming highs/hi-fi sound), this could allow to get some that stuff done right on kronos.

I'm thinking of buying outboard FX for a long time. because I use lots of outboard gear and I want consistency in the effect section.

Most important to me - chorus (think Dimension D type) and reverb (Valhalla Vintageverb comes to mind).

Is there any multi FX rack unit you'd recommend for high quality? those Eventide units are damn expansive.

They are expensive but having trawled through countless reviews I know I would regret it if I didn't get the Eventide. I have to be selective with my purchases also but like there's no substitute for the Kronos, there's nothing much better than the Eventide stuff.

You're talking about the Eclipse? because I really thought I could spare myself the extra grand! this thing is 2000 bucks. really no decent alternatives?

Eventide Space £489.00 that's the one I'll be getting

Qui has the H9 Max £609 ish.

and if you have some great effect plugins or unusual effect plugins in your computer, you can take this to an entirely different level.

nice tip and concept sir.

exactly!

and as a bonus you could record the sound again and create a new sample based sound set from it.

I do this all the time, then i use the dry sounds of the kronos through the omnisphere grain engine, modify them there and resample those sounds in the kronos. It's a completely different kind of sound you will get in the kronos that way.

Experimenting with the kronos is a lot of fun that way :)

Like I read on an Eventide Space review, this thing can make a fart sound atmospheric.

I like NI's Replika XT. Comes with a large number of presets and is very flexible. Much less cost than Eventide.

but introduces noticeable amount of latency. not only related to Replika ofcourse, but any VST plugin, even if you're using a great interface like RME/UAD.
that's why I'm considering going outboard. also due to the fact that running sounds through DAW is less "instant"..

That is only when you are using non asio driver devices on a pc.
RME/UAD has ASIO drivers and you can get as low as 2ms latency.
it's impossible to hear that delay.

My complete studio is build around two central DAW's (cubase and Ableton Suite Live), with multiple ADATS and connections between Hardware synths, Hardware FX, Virtual Synths, Virtual FX and lots of midi controllers. I have absolutely no noticeable latency, everything is sample-accurate in sync.

If i were you i would check your driver setup and if you are working with the correct ASIO drivers. (based on your VST remark i assume that you are working on a PC).
