How good is the midi to style converter?

Post by Fransman »

Is it really as good as is shown in different web videos?
There should be a lot of PA4X styles out there, more than a year after PA4X release.

The results are variable and no two midi files yield consistent results.
There is no way to edit this process as it's converted by the Pa4x and some say it depends on the midi file quality but from my own trials of this feature the results appear more random. I wouldn't buy the Pa4x for this facility alone though .

I thought yours was an excellent question and I can share my experiences with the Midi to Style Converter...just my two cents. I have converted about 200 midi files to style. These are files that I have found online or have saved on disk for ten years of so. Many of the saved files can not be found currently on the internet as midi files do not seem to be shared as freely as in the past. Of the 200 files that I have converted, about ten did not convert or about 5% failure. Not sure why as they may contain too much information or possibly some type of marker. The whole process of converting a file takes about a minute...very simple and easy. About 80% of the conversions sound great, 18% sound fine, and 2% are horrible...delete. As an example, the midi file from the movie Skyfall can easily be found online, converts with no problem, and sounds fantastic. The Jackie Wilson classic, Higher and Higher converts well and sounds good. Ode to Billy Joe makes a nice jazzy piece. Intros are kind of strange at times, but you can push the break button and go directly to the style. Endings are all very good. I rename the midi files once they are on my USB drive so they reflect the proper song name. On a scale from 1 to 10...I rate this feature a 9.5 and use the converted styles all the time I play.
Most midi files are free on the internet and songs from the 50's to the 80's are most common. Fun ones for me are James Bond midis, Music to Watch Girls By, classic rock guitar/organ instrumentals, (Apache) Italian Westerns, or pop rock songs from that time period. Plenty without buying. Once again, I thought your post question was good and I think this feature on the Korg is fantastic.
