I have to admit after hearing my friends real 808 half a year ago, that it sounds way more alive and dynamic than any sample of one I've ever heard.

Sure, but more in vivid use, and less in static play.

This probably won't help, but here is the gear list for DM's Playing The Angel album from 2005 - lots of vintage synths, and an E-mu SP1200! I would bet they used softsynth drums for Precious.
