Is there any advantage using this external controller when you can assign the on-board sliders (and knobs) in both the K & O for the same purpose?

It depends on how you work.

The number of assignable parameters and function on kronos, exceeds the number of assignable controls on kronos.
If you use more parameters and functions than kronos has individual kontrols for, you can have an advantage with an external kontroller added.

Yes you could assign multiple parameters and functions to a single control on kronos, but only if you want to control multiple parameters at the same time in the same motion.

If Nanokontrol sliders and buttons are not assignable to send out whatever function you want to give them, then they are hardwired to specific functions. If so, there may be no real advantage to nanokontrol unless you simply want sliders and buttons that you can move to locations/positions that suit you better than the kronos fixed location controls.

If there is a way to get nanokontrol to work as sliders for track 9-16, then kronos sliders could control tracks 1-8 without having to toggle the slider set to 9-16 control mode and back to 1-8 every time you need to use sliders across the wider range of 16 tracks in kronos.
I don’t know nanokontrol well enough to know if it is possible to have its sliders control tracks 9-16 while kronos sliders remain on 1-8 tracks.

It all depends on the assignability of functions from the nano kontrol.

If you have Kronos paired to a computer DAW that uses Kronos as controller, the same sense also applies. Are the controls on Kronos enough to manage the amount of functions and parameters you go through in a single perfomance....

I am ok with kronos sliders, knobs and switches, but Kronos only has 1 foot switch insert, yet i rather two foot switches controlling kronos. I do this by hooking up an external device that can take a footswitch of its own and pass the foot switch midi message to Kronos.
So kronos local footswitch is assigned to SW function, while the external device footswitch is assigned to do Start/Stop function and do it with a reset of the track all the way back to the beginning.
The external Start/Stop message stops Kronos Karma for me, even when in Combi mode where sequencer start/stop does not apply.

I could add a 3rd footswitch to my external device and set it to a 3rd function.
The external device allows me 4 foot control options and passes independent midi messages of each one over to kontrol Kronos.

If it were just Kronos alone, it would only be one foot switch option for me.

So if Nanokontrol can have its control functions assigned to whatever you like, it can send those messages to kronos to control kronos. That leaves kronos local controls free to control other assignable functions or parameters.

It all depends on what kind of control assignability Nanocontrol offers.
And then depends on if Kronos controls are numerous enough for your realtime performance.
Kronos single foot switch kontrol was not enough for me and adding a second footswitch via external device, gave me two footswitches controlling two different functions on kronos. And i have the option, via my external device of choice, for up to 5 foot switches in total. 4 externally and one locally on kronos.

Thank you for such a comprehensive reply. I am working my way through it. I think I would only perhaps want to treat the nanokontrol as an external mixer for tracks 1-8 thereby leaving the on-board controls free to mould the sounds. My projects rarely extend beyond 8 tracks. But what a reply.
