master logic,

What curvebender said --- FM is capable of generating much more than bells and e. pianos. It's just that not many people created these kinds of sounds because of the difficulty in doing so ----- particularly on a one-parameter-adjustment-at-a-time synth like the DX-7 which didn't have any kind of graphic interface to help remind you of what was programmed.

Well, if it's just a copy of DX7&Co, I don't think it's worth the whole discussion. If you listen to the classic DX-sounds today they sound a little bit outdated to me (no wonder being 20 years old). I hope for a more evolved concept using FM-Synthesis. Somehow once Rolands D50 was introduced, the whole DX-family was killed and to my perception the concept of FM-Synthesis was not realy developed any more. I found that a pity as I liked the huge dynamic of FM-Sounds, their expressiveness and that they change not only in loudness but also in their sound-character once you vary velocity. :D
Nevertheless, the musicians (Matt Bianco, Kochbeck, Starship, Sade) mentioned above stirr some good old memories! 8)

Charlie,

Please don't make a supposition about what MOD-7 is or isn't until you've heard it. That's all I can say...

mhh.. do you know Laurie Anderson? She was using NED's Synclavier a lot and on her "life on a string" you can hear one of these "DX bell" sounds (which btw are in the OASYS already as sample! .. and as curvebender mentioned already in general for FM, very good sounding in the low range).
master logic wrote: but someone mention Brian Eno which brings a :D to my face.
This "someone" was me.

If you have ever seen Eno's setup in the last ten years, then most likely you have seen a DX-7! It was one of his most used instruments although he meanwhile sold it. The DX-7 was for example used together with Korg's Kaoss Pad on Eno & Schwalm's CD.
master logic wrote:Is this going to good for wierd soundscapes, techno sounds, experimental type stuff? Not going to moan if not but curious none the less.
No offense (!) but as usual, this depends mostly on the person who is using it.
