I find the Audix OM-5 to be very good for me. For a wireless through the PA800, the Sennheiser EW-100 is great.

I've been trying to do some singing while playing keyboard. It's very difficult with the Shure microphone I have now, because I have to be a centimeter away from the shield on the 'mike in order to get acceptable tone and response from the mike. And it's damned difficult to hold your head still at a cm from the 'mike when you are trying to watch the keyboard, play the song, and read the sheet music at the same time.
Please can you advise me of a directional microphone which will give a good tone and constant gain in the "zone" from 1 cm to 10 cm from the microphone? I don't want a studio microphone because they are too omnidirectional and I have to make sure I avoid feedback from the monitor speakers that are facing me when I play.
Best regards,
Rob

That is one reason I use a headset mic. It will stay within pick up range wherever you turn your head while playing. They come in many different price ranges, and you can choose wired or wireless. The only drawback for some, is that it doesn't allow for "mic technique". I started with an AKG wired headset for less than $100, with good results, then moved up to the Sennheiser wireless. This allowed me to get up from the keyboard and go out to the audience. The quality of sound is top shelf.
It takes a little getting used to it, but for some it is definitely the answer.

Hi Bernie,
Thanks a lot for your advice about getting a headset 'mike. Is there any problem with feedback having the monitor speakers facing towards you? Also with the Stennheiser wireless headset are there any issues with the squelch setting (ie the level at which the mike starts to transmit).. I used a radio 'mike before which took a second or so before audio would transmit, so after any silence period it cut off the first word you spoke.
Which model number is your Stennheiser and would you buy this one again if buying today?
Best regards,
Rob

Hi Rob
My Sennheiser is good about feedback, but like any mic I know of, if your gain is too high and/or you are closer than 2 ft, you would likely have to move off axis, or adjust gain.
The Sennheiser EW-100 with the M3 headset is instant. This is why it pays to get a better system.
How is the video coming ?

Hi Bernie,
Mick and I completed all the mastering on 26th Nov. Sean completed the duplication of the first batch of 300 DVD's (both PAL and NTSC) on 10th Dec. Worth just phoned me to say he will finish all the labelling, boxing and addressing this weekend and will post all DVD's on Monday 10th Dec.
Best regards,
Rob

I'm thinking of ordering the following wireless headset system, I couldn't find the Stennheiser EW-100 with M3 headset, and I wonder if anyone has experience of JTS gear?
JTS CM-204U headset mike
JTS PT-990B transmitter
JTS US-1000D receiver
The cost of the above is about £340 or $700 USD
Best regards,
Rob

Hi DNJ,
Thanks for the link to the Crown CM-312AE headset. In the reviews I read they say the performance is fantastic but I'm concerned at the poor reviews it gets on mechanical construction/ adjustability. I'm sure it fits Janet Jackson swell, but my head may be too big for this design
Best regards,
Rob
