For what it's worth, I played on a Tyros 2 a few weeks ago and found it strange compared to my EX5. To me the board seemed very unweighted and plasticy compared to the EX5. I don't know if the EX5 and Motif series of yonder used the same keybed though because I've only played on 88 key Motifs.

Korg Japan is listed every year in the Yamaha Music annual report, so there is no question Yamaha has SOME ownership interest in Korg.

I asked Jerry K. about this via PM a while back and he said Yamaha's ownership was very small.

I would be shocked if Yamaha currently owns more than 5% of Korg.

According to this information, it actually is a decent amount:

"As of the year ended 2007 Yamaha still had a significant interest in Korg. Significance is measured by the degree of ownership (typically between 20% and 50%) and the corresponding influence over operational decisions. Here is the relevant note to Yamaha's 2007 financial statements:

Investments in affiliates (other than subsidiaries as defined above) whose decision-making and control over their own operations is significantly affected in various ways by the Yamaha Group are accounted for by the equity method. Investments in three affiliates (Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd., Korg Inc. and one other affiliate) have been accounted for by the equity method for the years ended March 31, 2007 and 2006.

... and here are the financial statements:

Yamaha has the right to significantly influence Korg's operational decisions. Whether do or not ... <shrug> I have never seen a sensible company buy influence in a competitor and then not utilize the influence it has purchased."

I am shocked!!

Where is the above info, and does it specifically define "significant"?

I see the statement you reference on Page 62. I have never seen that in the earlier annual reports (or I missed it).

I have seen the financial statement part that mentions "accounted for by the equity method..." .

I wonder what the real ownership percentage is. I would agree that Yamaha must own enough to warrant the statement about "influencing decision-making".

I see on page 82 it states:
Korg, Inc.
Capital = 480 million Yen
Am I reading that correctly?

480 million would be the equivalent of US $4.3 million.

Now if we could only find the total capitalization of Korg we could detemine the % ownership.

Martin your asking the questions that I am curious about as well. I was shocked when I saw this as well. I think your logic for finding out the percentage is a good way to determine to the percentage. I would be more likely to take the word of a Korg rep on this matter. If Jerry told you its small, maybe it is a small amount. I just thought this information was interesting and does raise some questions.
