Damper Pedal Sustain & Sequencer query!

Post by cjp_24 »

Here's one. I maybe be able to figure it out eventually but only had my Extreme for a week.

A lot of sounds carry automatic sustain. I am figuring that sustain is an effect?? am I right? some sounds however like a piano do not carry sustain as defaut and you need to use the damper pedel to get that effect. Now my question is that sustain pedal holds to sustain far far too long and even with some other programs. Is there anywhere you can globally of even per program set the length of the sustain/damper pedal.

Also another quick question. A fully maxed out Combi contains 8 programs. The Sequencer has 16 tracks. So if i wanted to sequence them and load one combi into the sequencer it takes out 8 of my 16 possible sound locations and if I then load another combi into 9-16 location, thats is. I am all maxed out? yes? I cannot add any more sounds to that sequence. I couldnt figure out if this was the case or not.

Thanks
Cliff

globally - no.

Yes. Btw. sequence mode can act as "expanded" combi mode (eg. a week ago I created piano layer consisting of 16 different programs).

But where do you change it per program?

But where do you change it per program?
Try this:

go to Combi or Program mode.
Say this is Combi mode, so:
MENU->P4->Controller. Assign any knob, eg. Knob1 to "F/A Sustain" parameter. Now try adjusting Knob1 (remember to set knobs into assignable-B mode) while playing. The sustain time should vary, however the solution isn't quite good as filter env is also affected.
To get satisfying results, each env of separate program must be edited:

go to Program mode, select program. Now:
MENU->P4->Amp1/Amp2 EG
Set Sustain level to 0 and experiment with slope time parameter.

Good luck,

there's no "automatic sustain".
what you are reffering to is probably the realease parameter
it would help if you understood what an ADSR envelope is, so here's a quick lesson ;)
look at the picture:
Image
it's how a sounds volume changes over time
- when you hit a key, the volume goes from 0 to max, that's called "attack"
the higher the attack value, the LONGER it'll take to reach the maximum level. notice that "fast" sounds like piano or some fast synths have low attack values while "slow" pads and strings usually have a higher value
- after reaching the top there's Decay time, pretty much the same only the other way ;)
- SUSTAIN specifies on what level the volume stays while you hold a key or the sustain pedal. it has nothing to do with time
- RELEASE is how fast the sound will fade after releasing the key (or pedal). again - lower values mean quicker fading. piano has a short release so it cut's off right after releasing the note. some other sounds may fade away slowly

I suppose your problem is the release time, try playing with it
sorry if you knew all this already ;)

What I tried to do is to explain how to vary amp env when damper pedal is engaged. So the question is what cjp wants to achieve - shorter sound "release" time when sustain is engaged/when NOTE is kept pressed (env to sustain stage; this is what I explained) OR simply alter release time when NOTE is released and no damper is engaged/or is released(which is release time in env).

Thanks guys. Will do that. I forgot that sustain is a fundermental part of ADSL. haha, I remember all that from my Commodore 64 all them many years ago. I will let you know how I got on.

Thanks.
