recording being creative....

When I feel the passion, I often just sit down at the Oasys and let
loose, being creative with sounds, in a combi or programme.

At the end of it all I just shake my head and think "whewww,
that was ******* amazing" I walk away on a real high,
a "musical orgasm", as I call it

So I've been thinking that it might be worth hooking up
some cd recorder to perhaps a couple of output lines, to
keep a record of these moments and save the ability to
listen to what I was playing earlier on. That seems easier
then going to SEQ mode and trying to remember what I played.

Any thoughts out there as to the best way to do this? I noticed
that Mike has a cd player sitting behind his screen, on his
Oaysis. What are other owners doing to keep a record of those
special moments that kind of happen by accident or whatever?

There has to be a device that records continuously to a hard drive, overwriting the old data and keeping a hour or so of audio in memory.
Kind of like my set top harddisk recorder does to my cable channels. That would enable the kind of instant replay you are talking of.
I have searched for something like this for years, but have not found anything that could be left running indefinitely. Maybe someone here has the answer?
I don't know about the majority, but I too have a problem with recording the spontaneous hits of inspiration.

There are many ways to handle this task...

- DAW's -

-You could open up any DAW ( digital audio workstatin ) and record by going stereo out of the oasys into any DAW --- EXAMPLE: Pro Tools, Cubase, Nuendo, Digital Performer, Logic, CakeWalk, Sonar, Paris, Saw...just to say a few. Any of these programs would be more than sufficient to handle your recording needs.


- Mini Hard Disk Recorder -


-The mini hard disk recorders these day are extremely small and portable...most of them will fit in your hand. These devices have record times going into the multiple hours...and the recording quality usually goes as high as 96khz...is some cases 192khz...you wouldn't need a device that recorded any higher than 48khz obviously though.

*I'd stay away from using a cd burner for the recording you're talking about. The reason I say that is because you'll end up wasting too many cd's in the process. In the end, the choice is up to you...recording your material, even when playing around, is important and progressive for any musicain...I hope you find what suits your needs soon. Good luck.

I sometimes record to my jvc 20gb harddisk video recorder - i dont have it directly connected to the Oasys ( probably b/c i dont know how to connect it to the O lol ), and then i burn the recording to a dvd and watch myself on tv, mistakes and all lol

About 5 months ago I video taped myself playing the first 17 combinations in Bank A, one after the other, all live - I focused on Karma, and i wanted to challenge myself against Karma ( sometimes I'm scared of it!! ) I wanted to make sense of the combinations and see if I could improvise something with all the different rhythms and tempo's and everything else that goes with Karma - so i taped it all - about 30mins.

If you'd like to connect your O and your camcorder...try this.


1. More than likely your cmcorder has a mini input jack, and only one hole vs two...its still a stereo input though. First you need a mini to stereo RCA cord or a mini to stereo quarter jack cord...preferably mini to stereo quarter jack.

2. Connect the stereo pair of this cord to the main L/R output of the Oasys and the mini end should be connected to the camcorder audio input. **** If you only have the mini to stereo RCA you'll need quarter inch jack adaptors for the RCA tips...****

3. Now you can record un-interupted audio and your video at the same time. You could even set up a mic thru the oasys and document your parts as you work and record...

While all your suggestions are good for normal recording tasks, my prime requirement is that the device is recording at all times.
I was hoping that perhaps one of the portable recorders would offer the kind of functionality I'm describing in my earlier message.

Hmmmm...take a look at this device. It seems to have an incredible rec time and outstanding quality ( 24bit/96khz )...very small too...its not an indefinite rec, but its pretty cool. I don't know where you're going to find an indefinite rec...hmmmmm

I have the original Micro Track and it's great, but does not fill this need.
Another possible way would be with a device that records only when it detects signal.

I don't know if you use a DAW or not with your oasys, but here is another idea. I have a Pro Tools HD set up that I run when I play or do anything on my oasys...In pro tools there is a rec signal detect option on any channel while having the audition/rec buttons armed. When this option is enabled, it only records when the DAW is receiving a signal for any input device/oasys, therfore its alway recording. I've only used it a couple of times... I found it helpful in song writing session with other players...any signal, and I do mean any input signal, will be recorded...the advantage of using a DAW is that I can assign the musician to his/her designated track and sill utilize this feature with multiple player at once...Hope this helps...thats all I can come up with.
