why no MIDI via USB?..

Hello,
Why can't the Oasys use it's USB ports for handling MIDI?
Is it because it acts as a USB-host or something?
Maybe I am missing something fundamental here..
Seems a bit odd that we still have to rely on MIDI cables for communication with the world..

The OASYS has USB host ports, not device ports. The OASYS actually uses a standard form-factor mother board - the ports are electrically identical to those on your PC.
I've never understood why USB MIDI was so great - on my Yamaha 01V96 mixing boards using Studio manager is a major pain in the butt because you have to load the USB drivers, and then you have to guess what port the computer has assigned them. It's doubly bad for me since I have two 01V96 boards - twice the guesswork to get everything synced.
In my opinion, the ability to do multi-record from a computer sequencer to the Oasys is the killer MIDI feature. This saves tons of time compared to playing the sequence back once for each track.

You can control your Oasys through its onboard USB ports...I done it with my Kontrol 49!
I would say that its only a matter of time Before Korg perhaps do something with this to be able to control other external devices via the USB hubs(Software upgrade ??) after all,the machine itself is pretty lightweight with only 1 Midi out, which renders the hardware side of things for the sequencer obselete,if they incorporated the USB to control a further couple of devices they could incorporate a larger sequencer which handles more than simply 16 channels...

curvebender,

One quick solution: a MIDI to USB cable/converter.

Google it to find several solutions, if that is what you really need.

One Quick answer...
How would you actually access that USB Hub Midi port from inside the Oasys???to assign its communication so it would work independently from the On board Midi Ports!
Whilst it may power the USB Midi Device how would you gain access to the communication options
You can control the Oasys from an external USB device but there is no way to define it other than controlling via the Global or Sequencer Midi channels to control the Oasys internal sound generator so as far as it goes now there is only one way communication.
so using a Midi convertor from the USB ports is of no benefit.Until its assignable so it works seperatly from the Hardware outputs.

Kontrol49,
You missed my intended direction of information flow: MIDI to USB (not USB to MIDI). This uses the MIDI ports on back and simply converts the plug.
Of course, this does not answer the original question. Then again, it is an election year.
Custom solution:
http://www.doepfer.de/home_e.htm
Go down the page to: USB64 = USB/Midi interface with 64 analog or digital inputs

My personal preference is to use the computer as a Master sequencer that uses a single USB cable to a MOTU MTP AV. Then run all MIDI signals (several generations of gear) to the MTP AV and as the song(s) progress, the MTP AV can change (via the sequencer timed patch changes) how the keyboards are routed and give me various layers of sound when needed from any given keyboard. I also have several presets that are easy to trigger so I can wing it when needed or for writing sessions. It is a 90's solution until all these babies run on Hydrogen.
If I try to use all my synths with USB direct to computer it limits my MIDI flexibility (I think) = but I am willing to learn.

This is really good to know = say you have an 88 key "O" and you want a "key fall" organ feel for your organ or synth solos. Onstage its a great way to stand up and face the flank crowd and give them some action.
Thanks for the input.

get it, input.
