Can OS 1.0.1 be updated directly to OS 1.2.3
Guys,
Is it possible to update the OS from 1.0.1 to 1.2.3 directly while skipping the intermediate updates like 1.1
Would I be missing certain Linux updates and routines if I do this?
I sent an email to customerservice@korgusa.com requesting version 1.1 CDs. Their service was lightning fast. FedEx delivered a brown box this morning with a set of 4 OS version 1.2.3 CDs. They were superbly packed. Service like this is very impressive.
My intention is to capture the Public-ID on my OASYS 76, register my instrument on KorgUser.net and upgrade the OS to 1.3.1
My understanding was that I needed to install OS 1.1 in order to find what my Public-ID is on my unit and proceed from that point.
I purchased this OASYS 76 from our local Guitar Center. It was in a sealed unopened box and had a very low serial number (000355). I was one of the lucky ones to find both printed manuals – The Operation Guide and Parameter Guide – inside the box.
How exactly do you begin the update process?

I'm glad to hear that you're interested in the manuals! Note that the manuals have been revised extensively since version 1.0 - including improvements to older sections, as well as new info for the updates. Check out the PDF versions, which are up-to-date and make careful use of PDF features - all references are hypertext, for instance.Tapas wrote:I purchased this OASYS 76 from our local Guitar Center. See "Using the included Restore CDs to restore the system and factory sounds" in the Appendix of the Parameter Guide. Make sure to disconnect any USB devices before you start!Tapas wrote:How exactly do you begin the update process?

Success!!
I was able to get my 16 character Public ID using the version 1.2.3 CDs.
However, when I inserted Restore CD #1 into the CDROM drive, and pressed the [GLOBAL] button to get to the GLOBAL P0:Basic Setup page and then chose [Update System Software] I got the following response:
Insert the Version Updater CD, and press “OK”
[OK]
Are You Sure?
[OK]
Update Error
Error: the system update was not successful
[OK]
So to get around this hurdle, I kept the Restore CD #1 in the CDROM drive and turned OFF the OASYS.
Next, I turned it back on, and this forced the OASYS to boot from the CD.
It came up with this screen:
OASYS RESTORE CD v1.2.3
This OASYS must be re-authorized before the installation can continue.
Please write down the Public ID shown below, and then go to the following website to begin the re-authorization:
http://www.korguser.net/oasys/
My 16 character Public ID was displayed at the bottom of the screen.
I used that Public ID and Serial Number to register on KorgUser.net and got back this message:
Thank you for completing your OASYS registration!
Within the hour, you should receive an email message from reauth@korgrd.com. This message will include the reauth.iso CD image file in a zip-compressed enclosure, along with step-by-step instructions for its use. Please read the instructions in their entirety before burning the CD image. (If you are re-authorizing as part of an OASYS system update, you can also simply use the instructions included with the update.)
I guess I will wait for the ISO image and then proceed.
So far so good!!!

Korg emailed me the Reauthorization File within minutes of completing my registration.
I got a file named reauth.iso (6208KB) when I unzipped it. I used NERO Burning ROM 6 using the [Burn Image to Disc] task to make my Reauthorization CD.
This CD has the following contents:
boot
isolinux
boot.cat
initrd.gz
isolinux.bin
isolinux.cfg
vmlinuz
init.img
I placed this Reauthorization CD in the CDROM drive and turned the OASYS OFF.
After waiting 10 seconds, I turned ON the OASYS.
I got this black message screen:
Boot from CD:
ISOLINUX 2.09 2004-04-26
Loading vmlinuz
Loading initrd.gz
Ready
Next, I got this blue message screen:
OASYS SYSTEM RE-AUTHORIZATION
Re-authorization complete.
Normally, the next step will be to install the OASYS software.
To do so, please insert Restore CD ¼, and then restart.
So, I placed Restore CD #1 in the CDROM drive and turned OFF the OASYS.
After waiting for 10 seconds, I turned it back ON.
As before it begins to boot from the CD and then I get this screen:
OASYS RESTORE CD v1.2.3
[x] Restore OS and factory sounds
[ ] Restore factory sounds
[ ] Initialize Internal Memory
[ ] Format HD, and then restore OS and factory sounds
Here is where I have a critical question before I proceed any furthur.
I can see that I need to select the first option (Restore OS and factory sounds) and proceed. I will be asked for the other CDs in sequence. This will delete all the FACTORY data and recopy the latest version from the restore CDs.
However, there is another way to update the OS as mentioned by Dan.
I can turn ON the OASYS to let it boot from the Hard Drive, then place the Restore CD #1 in the CDROM drive, then press the GLOBAL button to get to the GLOBAL P0:Basic Setup page and then select [Update System Software]
So as a user, I am presented with two choices:
1. Boot the OASYS with Restore CD #1 in the CDROM drive and follow the on-screen instructions.
2. Boot the OASYS normally, then place the Restore CD#1 in the drive and select the [Update System Software] option from the Global Basic Menu.
Which one should I use?
I definitely want the new STR programs installed.
Thanks,
Tapas

It worked. I have successfully upgraded my OS to 1.2.3
As you suggested, I booted the OASYS with Restore CD #1 in the drive and selected the default option – Restore OS and factory sounds.
I followed the on screen prompts:
Now installing system…
PLEASE INSERT CD 2
[Enter]
PLEASE INSERT CD 3
[Enter]
PLEASE INSERT CD 4
[Enter]
Now installing demos…
Finishing install…
Restore Complete – OK
Please remove CD, and turn off the power
When I rebooted the OASYS, it booted properly from the hard drive and came up with this screen:
Version: 1.2.3
Memory: 1GB
Options: Exs1
I am all set for now. Next, I would have to upgrade the RAM to 2GB.
Thanks to you staying up so late and helping me out, this upgrade was a painless process. I wasn’t expecting direct guidance from you.

Um... not quite right Mike.uktechsupport wrote:Also Guys

1.31a will update any OASYS that is at least at 1.1 to the latest version, but if you're earlier than 1.1 you have to do a complete 4-CD upgrade process, including the re-authorization.
So "passing" from 1.0x to 1.1X or higher requires the 4 CD process.
Moving from 1.1X to anything higher can be done in one step using the 1.31a file.
Clearer?
regards,
Jerry
Thanks Mike for mentioning about the shortcut while upgrading to OS 1.3.1a and thanks to Jerry for clarifying about the special case when upgrading from 1.0.x – which requires going through the 4CD process.
With all you veterans and experts, I feel I am in good hands.
As a new user, I welcome all the tips and tricks you can throw at me. Speaking of which, I took advantage of this great tip on upgrading RAM posted by Fred on the Karma-Lab forum:
http://www.karma-lab.com/forum/showthre ... eadid=6464
Fred found this G.SKILL Value 1GB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) memory module which worked like a charm on his OASYS:
http://www.newegg.com/product/product.a ... 6820231036
Indeed, this was the best deal to be found at $41.99 + $4.99 Shipping.
I ordered it right away. NewEgg is going to be delivering this on Monday.
Judging from the very clear instructions and diagrams created by Dan on pages 900-902 of the printed Parameter Guide, this looks like an easy installation.
This 984 page Parameter Guide that Dan has put together has to be the most comprehensive, in-depth bible ever written for a musical instrument. This must have taken an insane amount of sleepless nights.
I like the way the PDF version is in full color and you can zoom and print just the sections you desire while every topic is hyperlinked for quick navigation.

Guys,
The memory upgrade was a complete success!
UPS delivered the G.SKILL 1GB memory stick this morning. This memory module was a perfect fit. I did not have to force it in. As I gently pressed the module in the unused slot, the side plastic tabs locked on.
I have activated Exs2 to load upon startup.
When I reboot, I get this screen message:
Version: 1.2.3
Memory: 2GB
Options: Exs1, Exs2
My next question is, what will be the easiest way to upgrade to OS 1.3.1
Can the OS 1.3.1 update CDs be ordered through Korg USA?
