Oh yeah just because a song sells or even wins a grammy doesn't make it good music. A lot of "fad music" has won grammy's. Also good music of course is a matter of opinion. In my OPINION, any music made with the sole purpose of selling records with no feeling from the artist isn't "real" music. Of course, just an opinion.

I have to agree with Sharp on this. Hip-hop to me is spoken word, not music. By that definition these "artists" are not musicians. To my mind a musician should be producing MUSIC not spoken words. Sure, some of these guys do both, but that's rare.

All this goes to show that you can never go broke by under estimating the taste of the American public.

WiLiAmm using the Oasys?? This guy couldnt play a Magnus Chord Organ!! Classic example of some Record Company "pawn" or record executives kid that was promoted and is grossly overpaid. They BEP were live on Cable a few weeks ago and they seriously sucked big time.. Their music is for 8 year olds that dont have a clue what music is.

Very true in fact. I totally agree with you. Speaking of people winning grammies that isn't good music take Amy Winehouse for example. Her life is a disaster and I personally think her music is worse! and yet she comes away with 5 grammies??? I think thats outragous! I think its unfair to all the other artists who do deserve those awards.

And I think this is a good opinion. one must be in love with music. controlled by it to create it. :D Like James Blunt for example. A lot of his stuff doesn't go over because its just not the stuff people will listen to but he sings it cause thats who he is! And he sings with such passion, heart and soul. He is truly a musician!

Although I think Close To The Edge (Yes, for any young people there) is one of the greatest pieces of music out there, the words make absolutely no sense to me. I guess I'm probably not spiritual enough.

On the other hand, my 14 year old daughter loves hip hop and thinks the words in such songs are great!

I suspect I"m suffering from the ailment described in "This is your brain on music" (great book, http://www.yourbrainonmusic.com/) where older people lose their ability to appreciate new types of music!

Close to the Edge is by Yes, one of the three greatest progressive rock bands ever (in the opinion of many people). The other two were ELP and Genesis.

Indeed I thought it was very interesting that most of the songs that Jordan Rudess covered in his new album were covers from those three bands.

Heavy Metal is a noise??

Ohhh, all in fun. But I seriously recommend that any serious musician read Levitan's book, "This is your brain on music". It has some fascinating insights into the progress that has been made in understanding why we react to music the way we do, as well as why older people tend not to like music of newer generations.

My father (who only played classical music) teased me all the time about the music I listened to and I find myself reacting the same way with my children.

The reasons happen to be very interesting (intellectually).[/quote]

Thanks much! I actually already have a couple songs by Yes. I look forward to checking out this new one! :D

Levitan's book is not about theory. He's an ex-recording engineer who got his Ph.D. in cognitive psychology. It's a great read!
