question about slider asignment

Post by smitlag »

Hello I have owned my Oasys for about a year now. I am currently running OS1.31 . I have created several combinations that I use with my band material. Is there anyway to assign one slider to control the volume of more than one sound in a setup? Let's say for example you have a combination with 8 sounds. If you wanted to use one fader to control three instruments at the same time as opposed having 1 fader per program. As another example lets say your setup used mixers faders 1-10. Since 9,10 require a quick button press to access mixer 9-16 faders this can be inconvenient if you are pretty busy with your hands. I know with Kurzweil you can share controller assignments per zone. I am betting that I can do this with the Oasys but I just don't know how yet.

Thanks

Interesting question ... I don't think there is a way of doing that. Anyone else know if that is possible ?

There is at least no direct way to do this that I have found. I've had a similar desire, since I was used to being able to do that with my Kurzweil equipment. One possibility though may be the Vector joystick. You can set whether or not each part responds to Vector volume.

That would get you there at least porportionally; if you wanted to have the levels to be scaled differently from each other, I think it might be possible to set the Vector joystic to be an alt modulation source to the amp stage if you edit the programs in your combination.

This issue, and the lack of mute buttons that mute on the MIDI side of things rather than the audio side of things (thus saving polyphony for parts that are currently muted) are my two biggest gripes about combi mode.
Your issue comes from the fact that Korg uses the whole "global channel" concept and proprietary controller assignment for volume levels, rather than a more standard CC model like how Kurzweil works.

This bit me recently when I was doing a sequence - I wanted to adjust a part volume while I was recording, but I noticed that my volume change got recorded as well. I searched the relevant channel for MIDI CC7, but never found it. I eventually found that MIDI sysex was the source of the change. The amazing thing was that the sysex was recorded on a completely different MIDI channel than the part that I was adjusting the volume of!

One other idea comes to mind, but it is a hack: If you use the external control layer and use a MIDI cable to loop the MIDI out to the MIDI in, you might be able to get the effect you want, but there may be other consequences such as double notes. I've never tried this.

Jerry just posted an interesting solution, in another thread. KARMA patterns don't need to be running - this is a simple switch ON/OFF of up to multiple tracks that could help you:

There is a parameter to control turning on and off Timbres when you turn on the KARMA button. This allows us/you to change the active sounds for the KARMA Performance versus what happens when just playing the Combi live on the keyboard.

Look at Timbre Parameters->WaveSeq/KARMA->the KARMA Timbre Off control.

Using this you can have one blend of sounds when playing the keyboard live with KARMA OFF, and then a different blend for the KARMA ON status, for the live keyboard as well as what parts KARMA is "driving" in the background.

Very cool and powerful parameter.

I always point out that you can use this parameter to swithc sounds even when you're not using KARMA. If you have no KARMA GE's set to run, and set Module A so Thru is enabled, then you can use the KARMA Timbre Off control to switch sounds by simply turing the KARMA switch on/off. So it could be as simple as adding a string layer to a piano, to switching from E.Pno to Organ w/brass... whatever.

I hope this helps you, and points others in a cool direction. Good stuff!

Yeah, this will be very helpful as I configure Oasys for use with my band. It would be really nice if there was a way to set them all in one go!
