KARMA for Dummies

Post by dhjdhj »

Is there a document anywhere that describes how to start using KARMA from first principles as opposed to using existing complex setups.

I want to read an example of KARMA at a level that would be the same as if I was reading about synthesis on an EMS Putney (which I used to own) or modular moog or Arp 2600 and the first page said

"Connect the output of Osc 1 to your amplifier and turn the volume up to hear it"
"Then press different keys to hear pitches"
"Then connect your Osc to a filter and connect latter to amplifier....turn the cutoff frequency to hear the effect"

Do I have to get the software version for Mac and start there?

I think Karma is best understood if you used the Karma Oasys software. You can see how GEs are built from the ground up.

The KO tutorials on the Karma-Lab site contains just exactly this. Check out : http://www.karma-lab.com/karmasoft/ko/docs.html

Try reading the "Creating GEs with the import to GE Editor" tutorial. This would just scratch the surface, but these a lot more to it.

I've probably just learnt 1% of what KO can do. Hopefully, I'll learn some more with my little experiments.

I'm documenting all that I do, so for example, after study the "Creating GEs with the import to GE Editor", I tried to find out what you need to do in order to create an 8th triplet beat. I documented it in the following tutorial: http://www.karma-lab.com/forum/showthre ... adid=12051

So it's a slow step by step process, whereby you decide on what you want to get done, and ask Stephen!!

There's a lot of material out there on the forums, already, it's just a matter of going though something specific, or asking someone! If you document what you've learnt, your giving something back to the user community in return ! :)

I thought about buying the software but as far as I can tell, I can't use it unless I actually have an Oasys connected to it. That means I can't get on a train or an airplane (or go to my office) with my laptop and dabble with it using softsynths (say) that are installed. Otherwise, I would have bought it already.

The Oasys must be the world's biggest dongle!
