Need HELP Recording Audio PLEASE

I've RTFM and watched the videos but my analog brain still can not figure out how to do this: I'm trying to record a song to use in a "Promo Pak" for my music. I can't seem to add my voice to the tracks I've already recorded. This is what I've done so far:

1. Recorded 9 individual tracks (channels?) on MIDI Prog/Mixer tab (drums, percussion, bass, piano, guitar, brass, strings, synth, organ);
2. Connected my Shure Beta 58 XLR jack into Input 1 with button pressed for Mic, phantom power off, level half-way up;
3. Set Channel 10 to AUDIO TRACK 10: AUDIO TRACK 10;
4. On the Audio Track Mixer tab I set REC Source to REC 1 (also tried Audio Input 1 but still no sound in the headphones);
5. On the Audio In/Sampling tab (after un-checking GLOBAL button) Input 1 is set as follows: Bus Select is set to IFX 12, FX Ctrl Bus is set to Off, REC Bus is set to REC bus 1, MFX 1 & 2 is set to 000, Pan is set to C064, Level is set to 127;
6. Turned Metronome level off;
7. Pressed RECORD button for sequencer;

Still no voice. Can someone please explain (in a simple step by step fashion that even a digitally handicapped person such as myself can understand) what I have done wrong and how to go about doing it the right way. Please don't leave out any steps or assume that I know more than I do. I have no common sense when it comes to anything digital (I grew up on reel-to-reel machines and still have a hard time understanding what a "bus" is, other than what Ralph Cramden drove) :roll: Thank you.

PS Are there any BASIC videos/books for me to learn how to use this beautiful beast, e.g., OASYS For Dummies... ? I bought Mike's DVD which is beautifully done but much of it is over my head. I also tried the routines described on this forum, but I must be missing something because I haven't been successful there either. Thanks again.

I'm going to work, but I'll examine your post, later. Did you check that "Multi REC" box, on the upper right of the Audio Tracks page? Before recording, check the PREFERENCES tab and press the Sequencers REC button. You should see a level that responds to your voice.

Maybe, this will help. Did you ever see THIS THREAD?

Still Nothing

Hi Mike and thank you for replying to my post. I look forward to reading your answer later. In the meantime, I did check the MULTI REC box and did as you said and went to the PREFERENCES tab and pressed the Sequencers REC button. There was no level meter visible at all. I then unchecked the MULTI REC box on the upper right of that page and a single level meter appeared, but still no response to my voice. The PREFERENCE page reads as follows:

1. AT 10 and Audio Track 10: AUDIO TRACK 10 (upper left of page);
2. Recording Setup = Overwrite;
3. Recording Setup (Audio Track) = Auto input;
4. Metronome Setup Bus (Output) Select = L/R

The mystery deepens...

I know this sounds silly, but have you checked your mic lead, I find they suddenly go . From your description, it should record.

Been there, done that ---

Hi and thanks for your input. The mic and all connections work fine in my Alesis mixer and my guitarist's Peavey mixer, so I think we can rule out the mic and wires. However, you may be on the right track (pun intended) in that I am probably overlooking a simple detail (due to my digitalphobia) OR (far less likely) there is something wrong with my O. Unfortunately, I have my singer coming over tomorrow to record and I'm going to look pretty lame. And I thought Rachmaninoff and Liszt were difficult...

I know this is an obvious one, but you don't mention in your original post anything about routing the mic input to a buss in the audio page. Sorry to make such a basic observation, but that would result in exatly what you describe. Also did you watch Mike Conways short video on recording voice/audio into Oasys ? It shows the whole procedure.

Good luck.

I've got the camera out, I'll try to show a more basic example. You CAN record a voice, without going to the bus page, but it sounds like you want FX, like reverb, etc.? The audio tracks all default to "INPUT 1".

I think the step you are missing, is in bold, below.

* To record a voice, go to the AUDIO TRACK MIXER tab.

* Check the MULTI REC box.

* Pick any track - lets say Track 10. Set the PLAY/REC/MUTE tab to REC.

* Press the PREFERENCE tab and you should see a level meter that reacts to your voice.

Also, recording MIDI instruments to the first 9 tracks, does not mean you have to record audio to Track 10. You can record to any audio track. The 16 MIDI Tracks and 16 Audio Tracks actually are 32 separate tracks.

I can't seem to find a model bus for the video, but I did find a red truck. :D

By the way, I also grew up with reel to reel machines - 4 of them! I still have 2, just to play back my old recordings.
