Is it new or second hand?

Post by markuk »

Is there a way i could know for a fact im the first owner of my oasys?
I bought it as brand new in dawsons they said it was only taken out of the box the try the key bed then went straight back in. It was never on showbut a few thing like the box covering the screen in the box wasnt there and keyboard wasnt in any plastic bag also the Sondius-XG sticker was already on the keyboard. Maybe im picky but for 5 and a half grand i dont think they should be alowed to even open it. i noticed on the side of the box it was delivered to the shop 12 months before i bought it.

There are several ways to check if it is new. I'll admit I don't know all of them but. . .

1. Have you tried to register it yet at korguser.net. (Also was there a warranty card in the box?)

2. There is a thread on the karma labs website where users voluntarily add their serial numbers.

I'd say you're fairly safe if they are a viable business. Given the accounting and finance hoops that companies have to go through, I'd say it'd more trouble than it's worth tying to flog a 2nd hand instrument as a new one - it would complicate their books.

Overall, I find that music shops do not treat their display/demo instruments very well. I went into Turnkey in London in March and their OASYS vector joystick was completely gone, and it was incredibly mauled.

I'd say the unit you’re looking at was probably demo'ed at a convention for example, but they do not want to admit it. If it checks out 100% cosmetically, mechanically and electronically, I'd say you’re fairly safe. I’d certainly go for it if those all checked out and was convinced that a good clean would have it sparkling like new.

Alternatively, you could turn this to your advantage and go in there poker faced, with the cheque written out for $500 less and play hard ball with them – let them smell the sale but be under no illusions that given the risk you feel you’re taking, you’d have to have it for $500 less, no negotiating....

I would guess you are the first OWNER of your OASYS. However, if there was no white plastic sheet in the box, nor the screen protector cardboard, I doubt their statement of "just took out of the box to try the keybed".

If that statement were true, the items you mentioned would still be in the box.

I suspect either someone at the store played around with it for a while, or the keyboard was placed on the showroom floor as a demo for some period of time. Alternatively someone could have purchased it then returned it after a short period of time. If the keyboard serial number has been registered on wwwkorguser.net, then it definitely was purchased by someone else first.

Realistically, assuming the store is an authorized Korg dealer, the keyboard would have to be "never sold" or "sold but returned quickly" for them to try to pass it off as new.

I would definitely suggest talking with the owner of the store, telling them you don't believe the story you were told due to the missing packing materials. Try to get some type of partial refund.
