MIDI Connections

Can I use the USB A or B ports on the Triton Extreme to work as MIDI I/O with my laptop? I know the Triton Extreme has MIDI In, Out, and Thru jacks...but can the keyboard send MIDI data via USB?
I was looking at using a MIDI controller with my laptop...and I found M-Audio's Axiom 49 that not only connects to a computer via USB, but also uses it to send/receive MIDI data...and it even uses the USB for a power source. No batteries or power chord required!!!
I know the Triton Extreme needs it's power chord...but can it transmit MIDI data via USB?
Thanks,

Nope... it does not support Midi over USB.

There are two USB ports on TEX unit; one is for data storage, the second one is for data communication with computer (including MIDI stream). I use this second one for TEX <--> PC connection (MIDI I/O). In order to make it work, Korg MIDI USB driver must be installed on the computer.

Thanks KrzysiekK,
I'll try it out with Reason on my laptop tonight. I'll get back with you and let you know of my success or I'll be back with more questions.

Thanks for the info.

KrzysiekK,
I connected my Triton Extreme to my computer via USB for my MIDI transmissions...and it Worked!!! I was very excited to see it working right off the bat.
I did have one issue with it though. It did send the note value from my TEX to my laptop...but there was a 250ms delay (like a slap-back delay). Why is that? And when I say "like a slap-back delay" I mean that there is no original sound. The initial sound originates 250ms after I play it... Is there a way to fix that problem?
Thanks for your help.

It is latency.
What software are you using. OS
Use ASIO driver.
This depends on your sound card.

Do following:
1. turn off "local" on TEX.
2. in the target MIDI application on the laptop create a MIDI loopback connection (so the signal is echoed back to Triton).
3. play some notes and listen to the TEX audio output (audition it directly from its outs or headphones) - if You experience delays, then this is caused by MIDI latency
4. otherwise - if You play some software instruments using MIDI connection and this is the only case You experience delays between keypress and audio signal, then the issue is related to what smstome said.
Let us know about your result.
Best regards,

KrzysiekK,
Thanks for the response and the easy to follow steps. I'll try them tonight, and see what results I get. I know right off the bat that I didn't do any of the things you listed...except listen in headphones directly off the laptop.
smstome,
Thanks. I will try KrzysiekK's steps first. I'm just getting into using a MIDI setup, and I know nothing about how to configure it. I'm learning though. If the problem persist...I will look into latency issues. By the way, here's the specs on my laptop:
Software = Reason 4.0
OS = Windows XP SP3
As far as drivers go...I just used the latest one off the Korg website...version 1.11. What is the ASIO driver and where can I find it if I need it?
Thanks guys,

If ASIO driver doesn't exist in your sound card integrated in laptop, this solution suppose to give you a good workaround. Try it.

I meant Triton headphone output to listen to the Triton directly, rather than anything that comes from laptop audio output, unless laptop souncard supports zero latency monitoring feature.
Good luck,

KrzysiekK,
I think I just got confused.

The TEX is acting as a midi controller, correct? If so...I didn't think MIDI controllers produced any sound??? So I guess what I'm asking is...
(a) Does the sound being produced by the laptop...get transferred through the USB cable, to the TEX, and out the TEX headphone jack
Or
(b) Am I listening for whatever sound is loaded on the TEX at the time I am transmitting MIDI data?
Thanks for all the help,

Currently we are just checking whether your latency problem is MIDI related, that is why we do not need laptop's audio interface for this purpose. If this is MIDI problem then following should do the job when it comes to testing:
1. make connection to get a loopback: TEX (USB MIDI OUT) -> (USB MIDI IN) Laptop OUT (USB MIDI OUT, echo the input) -> (USB MIDI IN) TEX
2. on TEX turn "Local" to off
3. plugin headphones _into TRITON_ and play some notes - the MIDI loopback should work so You hear the sound generated by TEX although "Local" is off. If You hear any unexpected delay then the problem is MIDI connection. If there aren't any noticable delays then MIDI should be OK.
However I doubt the problem is MIDI related, if it comes out to be true - follow smstome and shrike advices (ASIO4ALL is a well written KS driver with high range of buffer size to experiment with).

This is getting way too complicated. Yes you can use a USB cable to do
MIDI connection with Tex and Comp, i mean software as CUBASE or whatever
you dont need no MIDI cables.

Yes.
