The Kontrol 49 has no sounds on it at all
It's a usb/midi controller keyboard.
You need to have software which it can control e.g. Ableton Live, Reason, Cubase etc and VST's (software synths/effects etc).
I'll give you an example of how it works with Ableton Live which contains its own instruments and effects.
Turn K49 on then open Editor Librarian software - the software looks for your keyboard (see bottom left of Editor Librarian) and you're OK to go when it says connecting. You only need to do this if you are going to save or recall assignments that you make (as scenes) between the K49 knobs, faders etc and the knobs etc in your software.
The K49 comes with preset scenes (for some well known software) which you can load up and transmit to the K49. BUT if you want to control software which is not included in preset scenes then you will have to make the assignments yourself.
Now open up your midi sequencer (Ableton Live in my case).
Create a midi track in Live, drag a synth onto that track.
The K49 will now immediately be able to play the sound that the synth is programmed to reproduce. To take things further you enter what is known as midi map or midi learn mode (in Ableton or others), select with your mouse a knob on the software synth etc and move a knob on the K49. By doing this for other controls, you create a template (a scene) which can be saved and recalled.
You can quickly access these different scenes as you move from controlling one synth to another. The readouts above the knobs will show the new parameters that they are now controlling.
I hope this helps
