Oasys and breath controler
Hi,
has anyone experience in using a BC with the OASYS? Is it worth to buy one (do the brass sounds f.e. sound more realistic?) and which one would you recommend?
Thanks SoulBe

I don't have experience of breadth controller with OASYS (yet) but apart from using one with the Yamaha VL1 which is of course wonderful; I also use one with the SY7/SY99 and indeed with the monophonic CS01 II. I can telly you that even assigning it to filter cutoff on the CS01 is nothing short of astounding - it adds significant performace capabilities. So - given the option to provide breadth control to a myriad of performance features on the OASYS , from basic synth parameters to modulation - includiing its virtual analogues; I have no doubt that it would be excellent. I fully intend getting around to it - and Mike Conway (on this forum) has already produced very effective Brass results using one - so perhaps Mike will respond here. the Yamaha BC2 and 3 are what I use and I find them excellent.

I use the Yamaha BC3 with Midi Solutions' Breath Controller to MIDI box, a bit tedious to configure (no software, have to use manual SysEx) but works like a charm.
It's especially good for strings and pads. But for example brass sounds need editing before you get proper response with breath controller.

Not directly, as I mentioned I use the "Midi Solutions" breath controller to MIDI box that converts the controller output to MIDI CC# of your choice.Charlie wrote:Does Oasys support a breath controller?
If so, which one is recommended?
Anything to keep in mind for installation?
I have not tried other than the BC3 so can't say. But I think there are not many available.
As I said the configuration of the Midi Solutions box has to be made by manual SysEx, so you have to have a software and the patience to do that. I recommend MIDI-OX, it's freeware for non-commercial use.

I imagine that one doesn't have to be much of a techie to use it. I'd be very surprised if CC2 wasn't the default. Plug and play, as you say.

I was almost certain about that too, but checked to be sure and was surprised to found the default is CC#7 Volume.danatkorg wrote:I imagine that one doesn't have to be much of a techie to use it. I'd be very surprised if CC2 wasn't the default. Plug and play, as you say.
But throw this at it and you are ready to go "F0 00 00 50 17 01 00 02 00 00 7F F7"
To break that up for the techies:
"F0 00 00 50 17 01 aa bb cc dd ee F7"
Where:
aa = message type: 00 = CC#
bb = CC#: 02 = Breath controller
cc = Midi channel: 00 = 1
dd = minimum value: 00 = 0
ee = maximum value: 7F = 127
I have made separate SysEx files for each configuration I use, so I have to only double click on an icon and select midi port.
They have a software to control some of their other boxes, so there's a possibility they make it also for the breath control box but I wouldn't count on it.
It has a capability to send SysEx with variable parameter (only one byte), so it can control some OASYS parameters not commonly available.
And it can also add variable amount of curvature to the control data.
