Is there a way to sample the internal synth or drum patches without using resampling? When I try to sample in the normal manner it ends up empty (which isn't intuitive, to me at least)..
Seems like there must be a way to isolate the performances on those programs to their own bank...
Am I missing something here?

nope.
sampling takes any EXTERNAL sound coming in.
re-sampling takes everything going thru, so if you want just a drum loop off the kp3 you should record it first (probably everything will be easier to time that way anyway)
