A way to preview on headphones without sending out the Mains

Is there any work-around to create a killswitch to cut all the outs but the headphone so you can preview sounds without having them go out through the mains?? or of assigning a separate pre-master fader mix to a channel I can assign to headphone.

Cheers,

Thats a really good question!
I hope you get a good answer, because I would like to know this as well!

I think that as with most keyboards the headphone mix will just be a tap off the main output channel. it doesn't have its own DACs or anything like that so its not really a seperate output, just another socket for the main output.

Sorry if I am being ignorant but -- why can't you unplug the L & R jack plugs or kill the external main amplifier/speaker volume when you preview using headphones?

so you need some DJ-like features with a signal on the main out and a different one on the headphone. is it?

Some keyboards have the main out cut out when headphones are attached (Yamaha do, I think) and there are many occasions when that is a useful feature (simply you have the right sequence loaded or at the correct tick in a bar for example).

Going slightly off topic, the Korg Pa2x keyboard features a dual sequencer/ MP3 player that can be used in DJ mode to fade directly from one song to another. I can see how useful it would be to have a headphone preview mode for each player so you could check the song and tempo, and cue it up prior to fading across to something that might not be exactly what your audience expected.

But, the M3 does not have the dual sequencer or MP3 capability, so I am not sure what enhancement to the M3 we are discussing here.

It all depends what you use the keyboard for, for my own purposes, I use the sequencer and another keyboard alongside it for live playing. The headphone fuction would be useful for double checking that the sequencer was set just right (right position, if not starting at beginning of sequence) or eben right instrument selected if needing to use a track to play alongside the keyboard.
Horses for courses really.

In Global mode check out the L/R Bus Indiv Out Assign option on the Audio tab. You can use that re-route the Main outputs to the individual outputs instead (certainly on the Oasys I own). You might find that you can switch that temporarily so the signal no longer goes to Main L/R but still appears in the phones. If you have nothing wired to the indiv outs this might be a work around. Let us know.

Thanks for all your replies!

I tried the L / R assign as you suggested, Daz. On the M3 the L/R assign doesn't ever stop things going through the L/R jacks, but just allows you to alternately route the signal to 1/2 or 3/4.

I assigned it to 1 and 2 and could then switch it on and off. But in doing this experiment I discovered that the 1/2 outputs aren't affected the master volume control. So, I can plug phones into the 1/2 outs and pull down the master volume, but still have it in the headphones, just need a stereo plug to two mono jacks and a little something to boost the gain.

Thanks for your help!

Yeah normally that wouldn't be a problem if you're working in a studio...but if you're @ a live gig, such as in an auditorium, the Front of House Mixer is FAR from a location that you can tell him to kill the outputs before you yank out the plugs causing a huge pop (plugging them back in would actually be a larger problem) Sorry if i'm being negative:( Just thought i'd add that:P
