who programmed original Oasys combis?..

Does anyone know who programmed the factory combis for the Oasys?

I realise there must have been a number of people involved, but I'm curious to find out who programmed what... For example, was there a person who did all the "jazz" style combis, and then another one did the "electronic"?.. And so on.

Sometimes when I go through the combis I can't help but being very impressed by some of them. In particular, the chord changes on quite a few are stunning!!

Maybe Jerry or the man with the pipe can shed some light on this.

Curve,

I'll bet Jack Hotop & Ski had their hands in it, and possibly Dan too. It would be great to see if you get a good answer from them.

If you own the Karma Oasys software you can see the name of the sound designer assigned to each Combi 8)

Just in case anyone is not familiar with Karma Oasys, look here : http://www.karma-lab.com/karmasoft/ko/ko_main.html

It's our "usual suspects + a few" - in no particular order:

Jack Hotop
John Lemkuhl
Michele Paciulli
Steve McNally
Michael Geisel
Stephen Kay
Paul Osborne
Peter Schwartz
Toni Diaz
Ben Dowling
Clive Smith
Taiki Imaizumi

Helping on the sidlelines:

Dan Phillips
myself
Brandon Daniels

etc.

Thanks for your reply Jerry.

May I ask how long it took to program the combis? I just tried to program a "full" combi myself the other day, and I realised how long it would take to perfect it!!

Considering there are 384 combis, it must have been a well planned job.

You're very right to note that there's a lot involved! The time for a single Combi would vary depending on what was involved, but taking everything into account - sampling and sample editing, KARMA GEs, Wave Sequences, Drum Kits, Programs, and Combis - the OASYS sounds represent many man-years of work.

Paul Osborn and myself were responsible for that one.

Hopefully, he's referring to the fact that it gets so old being the start up combi that you hear all the time, and not that he thinks it sucks, since it's a good combi. :D

BTW, going back to the earlier questions, I estimate that it takes from one to two days to create a full-blown Combi with 8 scenes of KARMA, all of the controllers set up to do useful things, the right effects, the right mix, etc. I know, because I just spent 5 to 6 hours on each of the 32 combis in our new Catalyst Volume 1 set for the OASYS, and that's on top of whatever Eric Sawyer spent on each one - this project was a collaboration between the two of us.

During the OASYS Voicing, I know I spent two days on each of the ones that I wrote. It's a lot of work to do it right.

Yes, indeed:) I sometimes forget to turn my oasys on before my 240 watt Monitors, and when the oasys starts up, and volume is on over ½ way up, it does make me jump somewhat.....

But are you saying it starts playing by itself? If that is happening, it could be because your pads are out of calibration. Shouldn't happen. Or perhaps you just mean that when you first touch it, that is the sound that starts playing...? Anyway, I know I'm a bit tired of it. ;) But if you've never heard it before, I still maintain it's a cool combi. :D

No Stephen, it just happens when i touch they keys. didn't know "un-calibrated" pads would cause it to Start ?"itself"

Since my post, i've actually been using some KARMA on this Combi - and MY, you can make ONE combi sound so different, its amazing really. Quite often, I assume that when i select a Combi, it's the best sound "Currently-available" for this patch.

Yep, that's the whole point of KARMA. :D

The way a combi is stored (with KARMA) is really just a "point of departure" that the original programmer chose. You can go many different places with it, and end up with something that resembles the original very little.

AnthonyB,

I dont mean to sound presumptuous, but if you can get into the habit of turning on all your hardware and waiting for it all to start up and only then turning on your monitor/amp, and then turn everything off only after you have turned off the monitor/amp, that will help preserve your monitors from nasty transient spikes and potential damage....not to mention your ears :)

I have done that a few times in the past, but once I nearly blew my new monitors and the noise made me jump so much I never made that mistake again....I thought a bomb had gone off, hehe. Anyway...just a tip.

Re Particles & Waves, if you have the keyboard set to "Memorize" instead of the default "Reset", then on power-up you'll have the last sound that you were using. [Same as all Korg workstations.] I haven't heard Particles for a long time now - must check it out again!
